well I cant tell you about a regular air cooled 250R but my 300R totally ripped! the fla boys can attest to this, its a 250 2 stroke man! it will GO! with simple mods like exhuast (witch the stock exhuast is extremely restrictive) a larger carb from a 85-86 250R and a better filter tune all that up and they flat out HUAL!, the downside in my op is the 5 speed trans, it always made me feal like I needed an extra gear, I have a 350x also and I can tell you straight up it wouldnt stand even a little chance against my air fooler!

i rode a friend of mines and it wasnt jetted right but it ran pretty strong. My Z will beat it but not by much. This was when i had it bored 3 over, 38mm mikuni, k&n, and full dg exhaust. He had full dg and i dont know what else. This was a while ago. When i rode his i remember it wasnt much in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear but when i shifted to 4th it started haulin asss.

Those 84's are pretty cool man. My roomate has one that hauls azz! Kustom Kraft sells a 290 kit for them that retains your stock cylinder. It uses a SeaDoo piston, is cheap, and hauls ace!

The 84 250r is an excellent machine my 84 300r can smoke modified 450's and 700r raptors at the dirt drags and even before I got the 300r kit it was fast, I dominated liquid cooled 250r's TRX and ATC but couldn't hang with the 450's.

84 r sotck Rips. if your expecting it to be slower than your 350x, your dead wrong. these babies flat out rip. and being air cooled, less things to work on.

I think they are about the same as a 350X - maybe a little quicker. It all depends on what mods are on what. Also, sometimes an engine just runs great for no apparent reason. I think that is more common in two strokes. They are light and a lot of fun to have around.

I'd like to know the compression reading on your dads R.

Back in the 80's when I was a teen I bought a used 84 R and that was THE fastest ATC/ATV I have ever ridden to date. I also recently picked up an 84 R roller, with an 84 motor on the way. I can't wait to get this one running  .

My 84 R has some grunt to it, never rode any other performance atv's, but I rarely use all the power it has. The motor's got a few mods but has the stock carb for now, it was jetted way rich with the factory jetting. After I tuned it in a bit there was a big increase of midrange power in the low gears. If you get it in good running order and tuned in, you won't be disappointed. And they sound mean too. :D

Good luck finding parts!! 80 percent of the machine is discontinued!! The motor is very strong and reliable.

whatever man! just a few parts are, the motor will have parts avail just like the liquids, since its based off the legendary elisnore CR motors, the 300 on the other hand can suck finding parts for at times
