View Full Version : "Project X" 87 200x restore is underway

brrcuda

Well my newest project X is now underway. I did the complete teardown and had the legendary Honda swingarm bolt rusted solid. So a sawsall and hacksaw took care of that. Ohh, and a few hours of sweat.:D

I saved the 87 swinger and the bearing carrier is in great shape. Sent the frame to the PCers and got that back late last week. New maiers have also come in - best deal going is hyperparts for maiers by the way - i checked everywhere. Took 2 hours to fit them right since they dont come pre-drilled. They will look good with the stickers

Just received a nice condition 86 tank (not pictured) that just needs a fresh coat of paint and some oem 87 stickers.

This wont be a true OEM restore. If i could get my hands on some new honda plastics, i would go all out, but its going to be stock but with a few aftermarkets here and there. Since the 86 tecate restore, i have lost my energy in chasing after the million dollar "golden" parts.

New oem cam for engine and rockers with a new cylinder bore is on the list for the motor. I like the looks of the Cobra Aluminum exhaust and low pro tires on 10 inchers is all me.;)

I'll update as it happens.....................

VERY nice start. Im doing a 86 right now, and im glad i snaged parts when i did, there getting harder and harder to find. That frame looks very nice. I wish there was a local powdercoater around here. Anyway, Good luck with the build, its lookin good.

If you look at that pic close, i think thats just the grab bar that has some sort of red cover on it.

Back in the day of trike racing - all racers had to wrap their grabbers with foam. That was one of the big rules then. Nice catch on that.

I used black pipe insulation and electrical tape for mine in '84. haha;)

It looks like in that pic the guy wheelied it without the grabbar. The plastics have that flap that bends down though. Could have just got bent up on accident. Is that a sparks exhaust I see?

Thinking hi-comp piston and exhaust, thats really it. Nothing crazy - rather have a solid runner that looks sweet with just a little extra snot to it.

I contacted CS and a couple other thumper guys, they had no interest in helping me or guiding me in porting etc. Stinks, just because there old no one wants to touch it. That 86/87 motor has a ton of potential and I guess we'll have to figure it out for ourselves.

NINJA seems to have had a great motor but I haven't got any details from him yet. Those bikes are light and handle great, I think with the right mods they can keep up with 250cc pingers.

I can't understand why these guys won't touch them? Although there outdated, they still know what needs to be done and were willing to pay them. It's probably like anything else, we'd have to find 10 guys willing to sendd them our cylinder heads to get a response from them.

With the storm today, I got a lot done on the project X. Spent some time mocking up and cleaning up the parts. The bolt kit came in and, wire harness installed and tapped all the threads in the frame.

Tank is at the paint shop and i am debating buying a new honda seat or just recover this one.

All the bearings, collars, grommets, and other odds and ends are on the their way. So getting there.

Im thinking red powdered forks to match the frame instead of just silver. I think that will set this bike apart from the rest. Like all my restores, i like to put a few custom accents on it to make it "mine".

Hey CUDA, I covered mine myself for about 5$ in marine vinyl which is a near exact match to OEM. No lettering though, unless you make up a stencil. If you practiced I bet you could make a perfect stencil....

Here are some shots of my cover - no wrinkles or folds at all. Just takes a bit of patience and a hairdryer...

EDIT - if you wanna come down or I make my way up there, I can show ya how I cover them.

JO-ANNS fabric had this material, been running it for a year now and it's still perfect. Aside form STUPID me hitting a small spot with the pressure washer....Wicked Stupid....

Oh i forgot to mention. I am using a new/slightly used set of 350x fork boots on it instead of the standard ones for this model. I thought the 350x boots look more stout and give the illusion of larger forks - which it does. I bought them cheap from chris200x which are deepa's old parts from his 350- haha - funny how parts float around huh.

I think you guys have talked me into recovering this one. Nice work on the seat DC - and thanks for the offer but my sister is a excellent at doing anything with fabric and has done a few for me before. I know the one piece cuts are tough to get right and somewhere in my pile of tricks i have the "honda" stencil. This will save me $200 though.

I say in the springtime we hook up and do a ride down in southeastern mass. region - get all the MASS boys together for some trik'en. Snow is getting too deep up here on my trails.... Maybe the 87 X will be ready by then, if not my 350 or 250 are usually ready....

brrcuda
12-17-2007, 04:35 PM
Mine are maier fenders - just purchased brand new. My old oem set are pretty dirty looking and have been painted before - so i will just use them for trail riding if i actually ride this one.

I think people use brillo pads and bleach for the white plastics - then sand with fine grain sandpaper and polish with plastic restorer products. I really dont know, since i usually buy new fenders for each of my trikes. I do use NOVUS #3 and #2 for plastic polish on all my plastics to freshen them up though.

Finally got past a blocking point. Got the swinger and shock mounted on. The pivot bearing was so worn down that it was just a thin piece of the outer race left and could not tap it out. Thanks to SBLT500R for helping me get that piece out.:w00t:

All new swinger bearings installed, bushings and collars as well as a new swinger bolt.

Mounted the front wheel, forks and triples. Repainted top triple and polished the lower. Then I started to sand the forks to get ready for a nice polish. Front needs to come apart one more time to install new stem bearings and new fork seals - awaiting arrival.

Oh yeah - ordered a brand new seat from Service Honda and got a great price of $196. I am going to recover the old one pictured as a spare rider seat.

here's the latest pics. The tank in the pics are not the one I am using, its just for visualization - the show tank i have is at the paint shop getting painted.

It will be a roller soon.:)

Well, the tank came in. Had it professionally painted with ppg and cleared. Now it makes my shrouds look alittle shabby.

Gotta pull the forks and rebuild seals next. Then pack the rear carrier and clean up axle and its a roller again. I get to use my new dremel to do some polishing.:)

havent figured out the tire situation yet. I think i will keep the frontmax for now. I have a set of ohtsu 20s, but those are worth $$ and are really for my 250r resto project. I do like 10 inch rims with some sort of flat 20s with aggressive tread - we'll see as i get back on the ground.

Hey Cuda, do they have the 86 seat still? I though yours would say "ATC" on the side??

I'm still contemplating on buying a couple and just storing them....

Looking very nice!!

brrcuda
12-28-2007, 01:53 PM
86 seat is discontinued with the ATC logo on the side. This seat for the 87 is the replacement for the 86 part number. So for me it is/was perfect. You can always add the ATC with stencils if your daring.

If i were you, i would at least pick one up and stash it. It comes with a nice plastic cover that resembles a shower cap. I thought about doing it myself but have other things to purchase in priority.

The new seat has cleaned up the lines on this bike - especially now that it sits on the tank properly and not bent back like most used ones do.

Let me know what you do.

PVC works great for that.. I cut one 6" and one a foot long and use it like a slide hammer on the fork tube .. its easer than holding on to the fork and a 5' piece of pipe..and you have better control over the fork..:)

I havent mentioned yet that i have an 86 200x frame/swinger that I will be giving away for free soon. Free to anyone that really wants to build it. Its rough though but get a decent frame and swinger out of it to start. I wont ship it though. I also have a bunch of spare parts to go with it too. Might bring to PA if someone really wants it....

Parts for 86/87 - not too bad so far. The tank and shrouds are the golden pieces. All oem plastics are worth there weight in gold, but i am certainly not going to spend 5-800 on a set of rears - blahhh.

I lucked out a little cause it seems there were like (3) 86-87s being parted out just when i got this bike. SO i jumped in an snagged the tank, shrouds and airbox pieces through some direct deals around ebay.

The main issue with these that i have noticed is weeding out the junk parts that people think are nice.

Got that right!! I hate taking forks apart. Last summer I finally bought one of those huge rubbermaid containers and I use that for the whole mess. Until then the 20 or so sets of forks I've done made a mess everywhere!! And that oil is NASTY!!

I need to post pics of this carcus before everyone gets jumpy on that freebie.

The clause is that you must build it, not resell it on ebay - i can do that. I have misplaced my camera right now, but i have a picture on my work laptop, so i can get it later. It needs alot of work. A few welds need to be cut off (minor) - peg, grabber mount and rear hubs - yes there is an axle too - dont know if its any good though. I have the tripples also- but stole the bearing races.

1st dibs is raffa - sell the 84 to build an 86 - I'll be in PA soon (where it originally came from:lol: )

2nd edog - if raffa doesnt want it, you gotta come south and go riding with us to get it - lets see how that 250r runs.

3rd hrc200x - shipping might be a pain for me - but i will see what else i have for you.

You need to look at the pics first guys - i knew i shouldnt have mentioned it. I will post a pic later - there is much to mention on this one. But to the right person could be a nice woods runner in the end.

The frame and swinger were PCed with the standard red at the shop. I usually go in and match the color off the wall pallete of colors. So I dont have any code or anything.

Stickers came in and look awesome - also drilled and mounted the front fender. Thats all i have had time to work on this weekend. Found my camera but now cant find the usb cable...

Next is the engine work. Need a couple snapped bolts removed from the head, a bore/hone and ofcourse gaskets. Last is brake rebuilds/paint and I can button this puppy up.....

Too bad i couldnt get this thing ready for brapps ride. I would let him let the pack on it. :beer I just cant get all the parts and work done in time.

Gotta give props to harlan - he set me up with an 87 decal kit minus the tank sticks. Waiting for a full set of honda tank stickers to come in next. I plan on painting the tank shrouds also to match the white on the tank.

I still need one more warning sticker for the rear fender - parrallel to the seat. I think it is a tire pressure warning like the 250r has...Anyone know for sure?

Jim mac

on my X, the tire pressure warning is actually embossed into the fender. jim

brrcuda
01-10-2008, 04:25 PM
On my 87 original fenders that came on it - there are two embossed warnings -one on rear behind seat and one on the left side. Just next to the one on the side, is a black warning decal of somekind. I will look again, but I thought it was tire pressure decal like the Rs.

I cant make out any words to properly identify (small piece left). So i will get back to you on that.

All fender and frame stickers were 51 shipped to my house. The oem tank stickers which are 4 pieces were like 30. I think these 20 year old stickers from honda are junk and wish i went with Harlans - the old glue on the hondas are difficult to apply correctly. I thought they would be a better fit??????????????:beer

Minor Updates - I got the oem tank stickers on - which were a total *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* to get right with the curvature of the tank.

Put my duros on the rear from my 250r. I really like that look - so it seems i will be buying another set of those for show. It needs to be wider though- so im looking for a set of axle extenders.

Finally picked up a nice head assembly. Oh and mounted up a new baja grab bar.

Next is the motor - got new rockers and sliders, new oem cam. Planning on a 10.25to1 piston kit and new clutch kit. Crank and rod seem tight so i will not be tearing down the bottom end on this one.

Im closing on this one - some big bills came in all at once this month, so things slowed down a little on this restore.

Thats a crazy nice machine you're working on. Any chance its going to be ridden or just one that sits in the garage? Not that the garage is a bad thing all of mine just sit, i think thats what they are for anyway...

brrcuda
01-18-2008, 09:37 PM
If ridden - only in the snow. I have 3 trikes (big 3) that are show only and a nice 250r and 350x for beating on... So I am undecided on how this will be used. Prob not ridden though cause its an 87 - but its not perfect and never will be - who knows.

This will be my last addition to my collection of trikes. I feel i have built my ultimate collection for myself. Next is the mopar to complete and finish up my garage.

Chris- I got aftermarket DID wheels with this one from Brapp, so flat lugs work fine. Plan on putting 10inch DW wheels. On my old 85 200x i had to put grade 8 SAE bolts for my extenders too. I think originally the 87 X came with the inserts which need tapered lugs but idk for sure.

I guess the 86s did not have that decal?

Edit - Yeah Gazoo - 1974 Barracuda with '72 400 Big Block and 4 speed manual trans (mopar original pistol grip shifter). Right now its being welded but its at the mercy of my body man to get done. So it might be done in my lifetime. lol. Have all the parts including new dash board and interior to put it back together - just waiting on Rear quarters to be put on but floors are complete and new, now. Will be put back to Rally red with correct year side stripes.

This project got side tracked, but it still underway.

Latest updates are that the bottom end has been painted with PJ1 satin black. Mounted it into the frame. degreased, cleaned and wire brushed the motor. I really am happy with the PJ's finish - looks pretty professional to me. After that, I put the SS bolts in for a nice dress up. Deepa showed me the way with the PJ1 paint..

Got a straight set of handlebars from my friend BRAPP - thanks again..

Snagged a New/Used axle lock nut set from ebay for cheap.

And lastly - new warning decal on the tank and helmet holder decal applied.

Rebuild Brakes, topend/piston kit and new exhaust system will finish this one up. Dont know how long it will take though. Slowly but surely.

Started to look back into this project 200x this week. Trying to assess whats needed to finish it up. So decided to take a peek at the clutch plates. First opened up - I was excited cause it was so clean and nothing worn that i could tell. Clutch plates looked great and basket has no grooves whatsoever.

Oh well, took the oil filter cover off to find this - nut for the crank is welded on and looks to have had the old nut drilled off......

well its staying the way it is since clutch is nice and new. But i am worried about the timing and oil pump chains. everything seems tight from what i can tell, but who knows...

It has a DID branded timing chain on it now - does anyone know if that is oem? I dont think so????

Starting to look at it more of as a rider than show bike now that i see this........

Paul, those cranks SUK!! I have a bunch of cranks and every one of them has bad threads. Why you ask?? Because stupid people REFUSE to read ahead of time and that crank is LH threads and a very fine pitch at that! It's lovely that Honda abandoned the stupid 4 prong nuts of the 85 and under 200X and many of the XR's but they just had to go ahead and make it LH thread which seems to baffle most of society

I threw a new pump in my 86 just to be safe, it was 40$ brandy new. I can check on the DID chain for you but I'll tell ya that ALL the chains run loose and I'm surprised that there is no chain tensioner, but it seems to work. The only thing that keeps that plate in check is the plate that goes over it. I hope yours isn't missing....

brrcuda
09-10-2008, 06:51 PM
The person did the same thing to the clutch basket nut as well - but did not weld it - just ruined the threads with a drill it looks like. Is that LH thread also? You can see in pic.

I gotta re-download the 86 200x manual since i restored my comp...

The oil pump chain is blue and timing chain is gold - i think the TC might have been changed......but IDK

To answer a previous question. I got about 1500 into it as it sits right now. Still needs topend - going with high comp piston setup, new valves and springs purchased, new chain and sprockets, and brakes gone through and rebuilt. Oh and needs an exhaust.

That doesnt include the kawasaki lakota that i traded for it to get it.

DC - i do have that plate that you mentioned for the oil pump. I will replace the pump as long as i can sneak it out of there without removing the centrifical oil filter.

:Bounce Just picked up a full stock honda exhaust system including the heat shield and baffle intact for $36... sweet.... this changes the project a little now, but saves me over $120 compared to the cobra exhaust i was going to put on it.

I need DC to help me take a look at the valves/head better and get a piston kit, then start assembling this topend. :naughty:

I am trying to decide if i go flat track look for tires or slap the 22" ohtsus that are on my 250r on it for back to a more stock look. Now that the stock exhaust comes into play, IDK. I'll see how it looks as i go along... I do love the look of 10 inch rims though.....

Nice score.... I just got 2 new Supertrapp cans with disc etc that Honda250SX got made up for us. Then you can use the DG, Cobra or the rare Supertrapp headpipe. They THREW AWAY the jig to make the front half or cone of the silencer though about 10 years ago. I'll have to figure out how to make that myself. But if your down with the stock system blasted and painted or coated, thats sweet too!! Obviously the price was great!

More than happy to help out with that head anytime you need me to look at it :D.

Don't forget to search the 200SX quad too as that topend is the same as the 86/87 200X.
