Hey everyone! Well my 1985 Big Red is almost done with the rebuild! I put a 4 stroke tech 305 big bore kit in, a brand new cobra exhaust system. The racks, headlight guard, footpegs, kickstarter & frame have all been powdercoated black. I was wodering if I am gonna have to get a bigger carb or maybe re jet it cause of the exhaust & bigger displacement (from 248cc-305cc) & I will put pics on here as soon as I get it all back together!

Yeah you'll most definetely have to rejet. If you want to keep it as a "torque monster" you can keep the stock smallbore carb, it will make more power from idle to 3/4 throttle. A larger carb will make more power at wide open.

WE NEED PICS.

well big red was smoking ALOT! Rings were gone! So I had planned on just putting new ones in, & my buddy said "well why don't you just call up FOURSTROKETECH & order a big bore kit", I was like they don't make anything like that for a BIG RED! Well they do make them! It costs $307 shipped to your door! It cosists of a bigger piston, new rings, sleeve & gaskits. Its not done yet, will be picking it up sometime this week! :p :p So wish me luck!

any idea where I can find bigger jets for that carb?

RedRider_AK
12-02-2007, 06:24 PM
You can probably get them at your local Honda dealer (or any dealership for that matter) or get a "power up" kit for the Big Red (K&N filter, jets)

Mondexbrute
12-02-2007, 06:28 PM
do they make a power up kit for the Big Red? I have a UNI filter on it now! , also I want to change the front rim & tire out, I want to use a newer style Alum. rim like An ITP has to be a 12" rim , any ideas?

RedRider_AK
12-02-2007, 06:32 PM
What's the front offset and bolt pattern? You could probably get a 12" aluminum rim, don't know for sure though.

As for the power up kit, not totally sure about that either. I am willing to bet you can get a jet kit for it though, Dynojet or something. Maybe just see what jets are in it right now and get some Keihin or whatever jets with a good margin of error, and then dial it in.

Mondexbrute
12-02-2007, 06:34 PM
bolt pattern is 4/110 don't know the offset! I am also putting 26" Outlaws on the back with 12" rims of some sort!

TravEX
12-02-2007, 06:48 PM
4/5 is the offset.

And, 'rims' are on a bike, "wheels" are on trikes and quads.

RedRider_AK
12-02-2007, 07:20 PM
Yeah if you can get a 12" wheel with 4/5 offset and 4/110 bolt pattern that'd be sick!

I think it's not gonna fit 26" outlaws in the front, without modifying the fork length.

SYKO

get a 12 inch REAR rim and have it cut and rewelded buy a machine shop to the correct offset you need for the front, I have this done for my 250R racer so I can run a 10 inch front rim for better tire selection, and its fairly reasonable, just find a plain steel or aluminum rim and have them cut the difference out and reweld it back for you.

since the big red has a drum front brake, u'd need to get a big bell wheel, i would think.... keep that in mind... ofcourse you could always make your own bracket and use disc brakes and a disc brake front hub assembly? that would be neat...

Hmmm, with all those mods how about a 200x or 250r frontend? That way you can use a narrower rim and tire combination..... better steering and suspension, disc brake. You just might need it now that you have a BRR (Big Red Rocket) :naughty:

Mondexbrute
12-02-2007, 10:00 PM
that would be very cool, to have a front disk brake! Right now none of the brakes work! I should be picking it up from the shop on tuesday, I am so excited to get it back, its been in the shop for like almost 2 months, & when I get it back I still have to put all plastics, racks , new cobra exhaust (that I hope is not too loud) & other misc. parts back on! & Will put up pics when done!

wow...you guys are great...just giving me all kinds of ideas!!!! Is it really possible to put a 200x or 250R front end on a Big Red?

SYKO
12-02-2007, 10:18 PM
no way would I EVER put a 250r front end on a 250es, maybe an sx but not a ES I had one and had a 26 inch front wheel on the stock 9 inch rim, it was like a mudshark or something, sorry I have no pics.

stock spacing is offset is 3/6 you'd want a 2.5/5.5 or 2/5 12 rim

God no!! No benefit to doing that. They are different in every way...power, weight distribution, etc.

Look forward to seeing pics!!

no cam or valve changes yet! Hopefully I get it back today, the mech. got sent the wrong base gasket!

There's a guy on here, ATC Tim I think, who put a 200X front end on a 250ES, and used an oversized plastic(Clarke, i think) fuel tank so he didn't have to fabricate steering stops. It's one tough looking Big Red! Do a search in trikesylvania, or go to www.tionestatrikes.com - I'm also looking forward to seeing pics of your BR from what I've read:welcome: :beer

well I got Big Red back today & got her all back together! There is just 1 problem!!!! Well I think? Should I have to re-jet the carb to compinsate for the bigger piston?

Mondexbrute
12-08-2007, 06:53 PM
ya'll help me out here cause I would really like to go riding tonight, but I dont want to cause any harm to the brand new rings!!! I looked at the plug & it is a little white...but it is a brand new plug!

Bryan Raffa
12-08-2007, 06:55 PM
Take it out and break it in ..nice and easy...then check the plug, let it warm up and cool down a few times

TravEX
12-08-2007, 06:55 PM
How much run time is on the plug? Does it feel like it's running ok? Have you done any air box mods? exhaust? If not, you'll probably be ok.

Mondexbrute
12-08-2007, 06:59 PM
it feels like it is running great! I put a Cobra exhaust on, rode it around the yard & took it right back off...too loud & pops when you let off the gas. Got a UNI filter, but that shoulnt matter. Time on new plug.... less than 10 minutes!

Mondexbrute
12-08-2007, 07:01 PM
also the exhaust is getting HOTT real fast! & when I cut her off smoke was coming out the muffler!

TravEX
12-08-2007, 07:03 PM
So, let me catch up, you put a FST 305 kit in your Big Red, and you are still running the stock air box with lid and UNI filter, stock carb and exhaust? Right?

Also, it takes a while for color on a plug to be visible without cutting off the threads of the plug with a hacksaw.

Mondexbrute
12-08-2007, 07:04 PM
that is right!

TravEX

HOT with normal riding? Or sitting there idling? Could be lean.

Sorry for all the questions, but info is important, especially after a rebuild.

Mondexbrute
12-08-2007, 07:06 PM
thats what my Dad said too, could be lean! But why? Cause of the bigger piston?

TravEX
12-08-2007, 07:11 PM
Any changes in the motor can require jetting changes.

Has the motor been broken in? Or is that what you're trying to do? I wouldn't be planning a ride on it tonight if you're just now breaking it in. Just my .02

Mondexbrute

How much did the FST kit cost? If you don't mind. Who did your motor work?

Mondexbrute
12-08-2007, 07:17 PM
the kit cost $307 shipped th the door! A local shop called Cocoa Moto Works in Cocoa, Florida did the work!

SYKO
12-08-2007, 08:35 PM
a larger piston like a big bore is sucking in way more fuel and air most likely you are lean now, Im not sure how big you need to go, becouse I have no idea with a four stroke, but I would say your lean

Rejet!
Did you put the cobra exhaust on?
The popping might be coming from an exhaust leak where the pipe meets the motor. That will also make the exhaust run hot, extra oxygen is sneaking in there, creating more burn in the pipe.
Definitely read the jetting thread, and rejet it.

My cobra exhaust on my 110 pops, and is loud. Blue flames shoot out, and look cool at night, but I hate the popping. Needs a new donut.

If you want a carb that is larger for your larger displacement, look into a 350x carb. larger jets stock as well which would cure your lean issue

Mondexbrute
12-09-2007, 12:33 PM
yeah the Cobra exhaust was leaking around the head! but why? & I know it is most diffently running lean, the stock jet size is a 130.

TravEX
12-09-2007, 02:12 PM
The brass ring/exhaust gasket may have stuck to the stock head pipe, leaving no seal there for the cobra head pipe to seal to.

your def. lean and the poping is probably from a leak/being lean when i piped a friends warrior it poped till i did the main

Well I must say that I am in love with my Big Red! I have been riding it for the past couple of days & it is running very strong.... lots more torque than before, still not very fast but its not made for speed! I still need to rejet the carb though.

is this the one on ebay? i seen one just like it.

TravEX
12-13-2007, 07:23 PM
If your jetting is off, and you are still riding it, you can do alot of damage. If would suck to have all that time and money go down the tube, cause you didn't get it jetted right. Is the head pipe still glowing red? How's the plug look? Not trying to be a d!ck, just speaking up for the Red, hehe.

Did you order the FST kit over the phone? I can't find it on the site.
