has anyone ever thought of putting cola into a gas tank to take the rust off? just wondering. maybe vinegar? those are cheap and you can get them anywhere. i know cola will eat through a rusty nail pretty quick... it might work. let me know what you guys think! i bought the kreme 3 step stuff, but it seems like it'll be a pain - but i do have 5 tanks to seal up, it might be worth the trouble. ive herd cola eats rust good. but then you would have the task of getting all the sticky crap out of the tank. i dont know if it would be worth it. but then again it might be with all the tanks you have to do. all you would need to do is some how get the stick crap out of the tank. could flush it out with some paint thinner ???

Doesn't the kreme kit come with an acid cleaner? Cola is just acidic which will eat away the rust but you will still need to seal the tank or the rust will just reform very quickly.

yeah, the kreme does come with acid. but it was $35! I read on here that that redkote stuff is half that... i'm always looking for the cheapest route - i have already bought the kreem though

I used the Kreem kit for my 200X gastank.
I used the cola then the kit.GOt it real nice and clean in there.

.88 cents for a 2 liter.Can't beat that for a acid bath.lol

i've heard the pea gravel, but i've heard from some old-timers to put a jar of BB's(instead of pea gravel) into there to shake around and get the rust out.

I use nuts/bolts and muriatic acid.

Coke may work fine but then it has to be cleaned with another type of thinner so there is no residue. If you don't get it all out, then it could fail.

Kreme isn't cheap so I'd fork over the xtra for acid.

People seem to like redcote better than the kreme.

Where do you guys get the muriatic acid? Hardware store? HomeDumpo?

What do you do with it after cleaning out the tank?

Ive never used it before and need to clean my tank.

Thanks

Exactly where you mentioned.... Nasty stuff though, don't breath it in or get it on your or in your eyeballs. If you have big holes it will leak out and get all over you while shaking it. I'd try and cover the holes with a couple layers of HVAC metal tape or something if you can.

....for that matter don't breathe the Kreem when it kicks. Another product you can use is Por-15. I would not waste my time with the coke or gravel. Gravel brakes down and BB's are harder to get out - marbles or bolts seem like the way to go.

If you can't find muretic acid you can find phosphoric acid at the local pipe or regrigeration store. Look for a jug that says nickel safe ice machine cleaner :)
You can dilute it with water if you want and it still works well - but you already have etcher if you have the 3 step kit...

i have access to nitric acid from work... it burns up pennies pretty quick(15 sec)

burns up pennies? That sounds bad - but look at this I just pulled from Wiki

Commercially available aqueous blends of 5-30% nitric acid and 15-40% phosphoric acid are commonly used for cleaning food and dairy equipment primarily to remove precipitated calcium and magnesium compounds (either deposited from the process stream or resulting from the use of hard water during production and cleaning).

maybe it will work, i'll just have to dilute it with some water... the stuff we have is pretty powerful. it doesn't burn up the whole penny, just takes the top layer off, i don't know what they are made of now, but it takes the top layer off.

Just use CLR. Pure it in, roll the tank on its side 1/4 turn every 20 minutes and it's clean rinse it and use an air compressor and blow it out.

how the hell would you sandblast inside the tank? like all areas? lol.

We have an old school portable sand blaster, turn the air on and she is goin . Anyway it has a flexable hose on the end, instead of a hard metal mouth, so its easy to stick it in and hit all areas. Then just use the air compressor to blow it all out. ;) think outside the Box :beer

I try to find any way possible to clean the tank, sandblasting, etching or whatever - and NOT seal it. The longer you can keep from sealing it the better.

I agree with you jes, I am not a big fan of kreem either.

i ahve used the por15 with good results and kreem is nto that good of a product caus eleaves toomuch margin for error. i just take the filte rout of the petcock to let the dirt and stuff pas strough and put an inline filter in it and run ti and just change filters. or if its a dry tank i put a bunch of nuts and washers in it and shake vigorisly then vaccum the dust out. and the best thign to do is keep it from rustign inthe firt place keep the tank full top it of fbefor eyou park it for a soemwhat long period of time. mor ethan a week. and just add a smallamount fo 2 stroke oil to it also helps sometimes. ther eis alot of things that can be done.
