So my dad owns an 85 250R, original plastics, fresh top end DG pipe. Hell of a machine. But all it does is collect dust because he has a pretty bad back, and it takes alot out of him to ride it for long periods of time. i've heard him talk about getting an extended swing arm, and upgrade the suspension a little bit so he can ride it more. Well i was thinking that for Christmas, i could do something nice for him, and get a better shock, maybe a longer swing arm. I dont have a big budget, so i've been thinking like a 450R rear shock, and maybe a 450R swing arm. Anyone have any ideas?

Adjust the settings on the rear to the softest they will go.Take the air out of the front shocks, oil can be changed to a different viscosity. That should help.

Ow ya...there is a re valving kit for the rear shock.

you can get elka to build you a shock. $800 or so. should be a huge improvement.

[QUOTE=edog;558118Take the air out of the front shocks

Hey Edog, there should not be any air in the front forks anyway. 1st generation R's did. Progressive front springs would help.

That's just what I was going to say.

My original intent, was by "aircompresser supplied" air being put into the fork like we did with the 81-82 R's.

the 06 and up 450r swingarm is an inch longer 04-05 is an inch shorter. and if you use the shock you have to take off the airbox..or mod it.

I agree with EDOG. The 250R itself has about the best 3 wheeler suspension available. If both units are serviced and set up for Dads weight then it's about the best ride he is gonna get on arm socket tearing 250R.

The benefits to some of these newer model suspension conversions are more geared to huge jumps rather than a plush trail ride.

I dread the day I have to throw in the towel and get an independant suspension 4x4....... Don't worry all, it ain't gonna be too soon!!
