I installed a new head today and got the timing set as follows: "T" mark on flywheel lined up through sight hole, camshaft sprocket "o" lined up with the little notch on inside of head. This brings the CDI lined up with the little black box. All Ive gotten do far were a few backfires. It is getting spark and has good compression. Ive shot a bit of starting fluid in the cc but still no dice. Any ideas what to check? Thanks!

pull the CDI rotor off and flip it 180 degrees yet? Unless you are absolutely sure it is correct try flipping it 180 - happens a lot.

It can only go on one way right? I tried moving the camshaft sprocket 1 tooth in each direction and neither has worked. However, the 1 tooth I just moved it made it seem like the spark has gotten stronger when grounded out on metal. The cylinder head came off a running motor. I will try flipping the rotor 180 deg and see what happens.

what can go one way? the rotor can go two ways - frontwards and backwards..
thanks jason - you suck! now you got me inspired to go build that 110 engine at the shop. I meant to build it forever ago - but I never got to it.
yea your chain is probably right. You can advance/retard the timing by adjusting the CDI plate.

So Ive triple checked the timing. It is spot on. I dont have a compression tester and am wondering if its too low. Should it blow my finger out?...because it doesnt.
If youd like to send me that motor after you build it, Ill dance at your funeral. What do ya say? :naughty:

Did you make sure the marking on the cam sprocket is pointing to the left lined up with the marking on the head? If you've done that and your sure the valves are right, Than it must be the rotor. Make sure you have the "Black box" lined up with the rotor when the F or fire marking on the flywheel is lied up with the marking on the case. If it dont work one way take the rotor piece and turn it 180 degrees. The piece your spose to flip is kinda oval shaped and silver i believe on the 83.
