How hard is it to remove that steering stem from the lower triples?

I messed up the threads like an idiot and now i have to either try to rethread it or press it out. Wouldnt be such a big deal if i just didnt get it powdered....

The stem has to be pressed out.
I think the steerer stem for the 1 gen 200X is the same.

I have one for sale.

i thought they screwed in... if you need it pressed out i can do it for you just mail it up..

I'm quite sure the 85/6's don't have a slit in the lower clamp with bolt that clinches stem down like the 83/84 (probably 81 and 2's too) do ?

If they do, it only takes 30 seconds or so to bop it out with hammer and block of wood.

I thought they were always pressed in, tried to get my shop guy to switch them out on my 86 200x, but he said they wont seat right after you press them out, I dont know though he's kinda shady.

The 83 to 85 200X bottom tripple have the locking bolt to hold the steerer stem.

It may work on the 85,86 250R.

It is not threaded in and it probably isn't covered in the service manual. But, it is a good tight press fit. I'd heat it up with propane and stuff it in my 20 ton press. I've seen them go for .99c on Ebay so don't spend to much time or shipping on it.

I won one a few months back for 2.50 and 7$ to ship.

I think the stems on the late model R's and X's are the same unit, could even be all years of Honda sport trikes are the same.

They are definitely pressed in, I've had many in and out before. Like Dirtcrasher said, its a good tight fit, but it will come out. Try a little penetrating fluid like PB Blaster. Get it shocked up with the stem good and parallel in a press and it'll come right out.

Im trying to save this one at all costs...got had it powder coated...

I took that stem nut and turned it upside down, thinkiing it would clear the threads...wanted to bang the top bearing into place...well it didnt clear the threads and i f'd myself...so pissed....

any luck deepa? how bad are the threads? is the nut still on there?. if the threads are not real bad they make a file that can repair damaged threads. it takes extra time but it does work. you just need to know what the pitch is and start fileing.

don't know how bad the threads are, but if its only the first few, they could be ground off, so the nut will grab the good threads.

i've aslo recut threads with a dremel and a cut off wheel. then wire wheel them and there good to go. never used a thread file, but they seem like too much work for me!

well i ended up using a triangle file and cleaned up the threads and it worked. so im good to go now...

thanks for all of your help. I was 100 % sure that the threads were completely trashed but it turned out ok.
