Is it the water or moisture in our fuel?? leaving stale gas in there or just time??
Does Honda coat the inside with anything?? Tanks look like they're made in a press and kinda spot/roll/seam welded all the way around and I wonder if they coat the inside with a rust inhibitor first?? Its not galvanized or stainless.
Why ask - Because I'm thinking about chopping the small rust out and sandblasting it inside and out, then braising in a small thin patch and filling some pinholes. But I don't want it to rust if I'm doing something wrong.
Anyone here evr played Orange County or Jesse James Choppers on there metal tank??

every honda tank i have has pinholes in it so i just patched them with epoxy and there doing fine, but i doubt they coat the inside with anything because they always seem to rust out.

the epoxy comes in 2 syringe tubes so it puts out the correct amount of resin and hardener. i'm not sure of the brand, i'm at school so i'll have to check when i get home.i got it at a local hardware store. you could also use JB weld but i dont think it works as well.

I believe they rust from people letting them sit for long peroids of time with no gas in the tank.

From what ive gathered throughout tanks.....they rust because of gas being in them to long, causing oxidation (moisture) and after the moisture has been in there for a while it turns to rust....i have a tank that i got from my 10$ parts trike that has so much rust in it....you cant see to the bottom of the tank!!! i guess it sat out in the weather with no cap on it....NO I DONT PLAN TO USE IT!!! haha

wrong, its from sitting empty. the inside of the tank is bare metal, the gas acts like a barrier to keep the moisture away from the bare metal.

I agree with the statement that it's from sitting with no gas. I used some stuff from the auto parts store that was called gas tank repair putty to fix a pinhole in my r's tank and it's doing fine. You can even put it on with gas spraying out of the hole.

its like with any vheicle, its better sitting with a full tank of gas, if you fill up before it goes away for the night this stops condensation forming during the night, they do this with areoplanes and 18 wheelers if they come back into the yard at dusk, over here they do anyway.

i ordered some kreem gas tank stuff out of dennis kirk. it is like a white coating that you put in the gas tank and let it sit over night. it fixes pin holes and prevents them. also prevents rust.
