View Full Version : Had my R shock rebuilt

Was going to do it myself but thought screw it, got a ton of other things to do yet. Poor thing was in sad shape, :( never had one oil changed in 23 years.

It had a new bottom out bumper, seal kit, fresh oil and nitogen and came to 93.51 (65 labor, 24 parts+tax) with parts and that was with 30 bucks off since I know the guy but your paying for their knowledge and just like anything else, paying a tech guy to work on anything is expensive now a days.

If you just need a oil/nitrogen charge then it's 45 + tax.

Thanks for the info, mine just started dripping oil hard yesterday, only a matter of days before its blown completely. Will be sending it out to your guy. I didn't know if anyone could rebuild these things, being they are so old

Yea im interested in how it feels, I may look into them to do mine, I have a stocker one I just acquired and looking to have preped for racing/ woods riding. I was going to look into works in all else fails

Yea, he said Honda shocks (14MM I think) for years have shared the same seals and stuff, it was no big deal for him at all to rebuild it, he had it done the next day.

Check your bumper on it, is it all dry rotted and hard ?

In this link (not sure which page) I listed a couple other companies that do them too, I don't know for sure they would do ATC shocks but most likely they would.

How fast was the turn around time?

Edit: Did they clean it up like that or did you do it? Did the re-valve it to your weight and riding style?

Im trying to drop my 83R shock off today to have it recharged. I had planned on having it completely rebuilt and having the coil spring powder coated black to match my color scheme but ran out of time and money before our thanksgiving ride at the dunes in lil sahara (oklahoma!)

when I emptied the oil on it, it was CHUNKY! nasty stuff. Felt bad that I had even ridden it for a few hours since I bought it. My bump stop isnt in too bad of shape, the rubber just looks furry and roughed up. Could use a new one though, but wont happen till after the ride in the dunes :D

thanks for the info man, I was curious as to how much it would cost to have it recharged

hey quick question before I make a seperate thread: How much pressure should I have my shock filled with for a 210lb rider? Eric brought that point up to me and I was curious as to how much psi I need to have my shock recharged with so that it will perform niceley at the dunes ride.

He had it done the same day I dropped it off and heck no on the clean up, I did that, that would of cost a fourtune :lol: I went with 220, 400 then 600 grit wet sanding then polished it up to make the shock body and resevoir look that good. It really doesn't take long to do at all, maybe 30 minutes or so but of course that doesn't include the washing of it 1st and getting all the gunked on grime off.

No on the revalve, that I'm not sure they can even do and my riding style:lol: I only rode it for 20 minutes so far so I have no style!

I'm sure it's set up pretty close to a 185lb guy though. I'm not that picky with it, just want a good healthy shock. If I was a serious racer, then yea, I would of asked but I'm just out to play around on it alyhough I do love track riding.

You welcome, I don't follow your "1/4 " tall" though ? It sets inside the metal cup and it's at least an inch tall.

What happens is when it bottoms it presses against the bumper and the bumper expands inside the cup, if you didn't have the cup, it would expand more and give you less resistence.

Here, I slid it out of the cup so you can undersatnd better.

I don't think you use that as a adjustment, there is a recommended amount of pressue to put in and that's it, you up your spring rate if you feel it's too soft.

I could be wrong, but that's what I think, call the guy (Al) and ask, tell him I sent you for sure.

Did you actually feel the rubber ? I kid you not, mine was as hard as a rock!

I would think that most on ANY machine would be that way by now!

Not sure on just a recharge but there is a scale method to see how far off it is pressure wise.

Not sure what it is for 85/6 model..........Simply compress the shock only 10mm (ends the way they are on machine) on a scale, if the force is less then 57lbs, gas leaked out and it needs a recharge. This of course is with the spring removed.

If it's more then 57, KABLUIE !!!!!

Mine was 20 or so :rolleyes: . not my doing though, owner before me.
