I'm rebuilding this old junky 200ES. I am to the point of installing the pulse generator on the camshaft. I knew this part didn't look good when I took it off, but am just now taking a good look at it. I went out and took my even older, even junkier 185S apart to look at it and it looks to be in the same shape...and they both look bad to me. But I've never seen a good one, so you tell me.

First two pics are off the 185S, second two are off the 200ES. Notice what I think is a magnet on one side of the base plate and not the other, both are same. Should there be a magnet on both sides? The magnets, if that's what they are, also look crudded up and broken, but they're both broken in the same place so it might supposed to be like that. I need some Honda guys to set me straight. Are these serviceable or junk? If serviceable, I'm thinking electrical contact cleaner would be best to clean it with, ok? If they're junk, anybody got one?

Thanks, Chris

That looks just like the one I took off my buds 85 200X a few weeks back...

To me, I think that when the cam is gaining RPM's those arms fly out and advance the magnet on there. The magnet is on the aluminum piece. I don't know what the heck it is that your circling but I'm not certain if it does anything at all. When those arms fly out, is what you circled a piece of something that prevents the spring from binding on it or flying out any further? I think thats it's function....

His kinda looked like this so I took it apart and greased the pivots and cleaned it all up. I also lightly 400 grit sanded the big magnet down till it was smooth and shiney.

Yeah they just keep the spring from bending outward from the centrifugal force. It looks like there is a plastic cap on the one. probabally to keep the spring from wearing. Other than a little rusty they look fine. Check and make sure the weights arent too worn going into the center piece. I had one broken on my 185 and it would cause it to rev up and down all the time.

Alright, I'll give it a shot. Clean and install, I'm on it. Chris
