Hi All,

I've been lurking for a while and waiting to post until I've actually bought a trike. But thats actually taken a lot longer than expected. And I dont want that dude (Syko) on the atc 70 to show up at my house so I figured I'd better post soon.

Heres my story... One Im sure you've heard before. I had a trike when I was in high school. Havent had one in twenty years. Now I live in an area where I can ride (south shore Mass). So Im getting into it again.

So heres my question... I located an 86 200x. Hes asking $500 bucks for it. One of the things wrong with it is the kicker shaft is stripped. Do you have to split the case to change that shaft? Are they available? How much does the shaft go for?

Thanks for any help!

And of course this site is awesome. I check in almost everyday.

i dont belive you have to crack the case for it, but you will have to remove the right side engine case/clutch cover to get to it. as for parts availibility, not sure, but you can check with service honda or bike bandit or even your local dealer for the parts, or you could always put a post in the classiifeds that your looking for them parts. some one here mroe then likely has one laying around. lots of great guys, and a few girls on here, with alot of good info and advice. welcome to the boards...:beer

Welcome Seabass!!!

Enjoy your stay here.

You are looking for Honda Part Number - HO28251-HB5-020 (Description - Spindle) Looks like they may still be available through Honda for about $85

Also - as Scooterroo says - by the looks of the microfiche - it appears you can replace it without splitting the cases

Thanks for the info guys.

Im going to take a look at it this weekend. I havent seen any pictures of it yet so I dont know what kinda shape the trike is in. If its in decent shape and mostly complete I'll get it. I wanted to gets a heads up as to how "big" a job the kicker shaft will be if I buy it.

well if its anything like some of the ones i have changed out, its as simple as removing the clutch cover, remove the kicker shaft and gear and slap a new one in it, new gasket and put it back together. i dont think they are all that hard to change.

Welcome... I'm on the South Shore myself. We rip it up just about every Sunday. Be foreworned though, it isn't "easy" riding and almost never legal but always FUN!!

the 86 kicker shaft is pretty easy to change... changed one myself once... pay attention to how you tore it apart... the kicker assembly is weird ( think atleast ).... but hey if a 16 year old can fix one, i'm sure you can.....

Well I did it! Im back in baby! :w00t:

I went and got it last night. 1986 200x. It had been sitting in a shed for the last 4 years. It looks a little rougher than I would have liked but for $350 I cant complain. Its the year/model I've been looking for for a while now. I'd say its about 90% complete.

Some things that are gonna need fixin -
Replace kick shaft and kick lever
Exhaust dosnet look right. Might be wrong year? Busted studs?
Looks like it has some oil leaks. I can see oil on the skid plate.
Rear brake resivoir is junk
Gas cap
Missing grab bar and rear light
Rear plastic junk. Head light plastic junk

Thats what I can see anyway. I'm sure more stuff Im not seeing.

I've attatched some pics. Let me know what you guys think.

Next I'll be getting a service manual.

I think Im gonna pull the motor and address the kicker, oil leaks, and rebuild the carb to start. I have no idea how this thing ran before it was parked so maybe I should take a look at the top-end while its out?

Also I noticed something near the rear sprocket looks like it was grinding? Thoughts on that?

Dirtcrasher

I like it!! Once your all squared away, you'll love the power and handling of a 200X. Not to mention that I know that thing inside and out and I'm probably less than a half hour from you.

Looks like they hit a tree with the headpipe.

There is a guy on EBAY with new OEM service manuals for 55$ shipped, thats not a bad price at all. Parts will be difficult to find, good parts anyhow. That rear carrier chain adjustment looks to be all the way down, may need carrier bearings which could cause grinding that you see.

I wouldn't yank the top end until you rebuild the carb and get it running. That year 200X has a rubber intake that is brittle and cracks, be sure to check it out or you'll have an intake leak and lean condition.

I've seen a few of the 86 kickers snap off. Most 86/87 200's aren't running the decompression cable and that may be why they snap. That is the wrong kicker too of course but they are available new for 85$, used good kickers are tough to come by.

Nice score ...not bad for $350. It never ceases to amaze me when I see the condition of some of these trikes. The way people just fabricate crap to bolt on just to make them "rideable"...That kick starter and shifter are crackin me up...the gas cap is quite the bit of engineering too  It must be me..Dont take it the wrong way, I'm not rippin on your trike ...thats a diamond in the rough right there...I'm rippin on the engineer who made the poor thing look that way...I've got a 350x that was a complete pile...a turd if you will...but its poishing up nicely. I'm just a bit of a perfectionist I guess...good luck...this is definitely the place to get help.

SeaBass8
11-03-2007, 12:00 PM
BP739 - I agree this thing has been rigged instead of repaired.

Dirtcrasher - Thanks for the info. I think you're right I'll try to get it running before tearing into the top-end.

Do you think I can change out the kicker shaft with the motor in the bike?

Thanks

The good news:
So it looks like I might not have to change the kicker shaft/spindle. I was able get the mess that the previous owner welded on there and the shaft dosnt look too bad. A little shorter than stock now.

The bad news:
Nobody seems to have a kicker they can part with. I'll keep searching.

Also the more I get into this trike the more work I see it needs.
I started draining the gas out of it. The inside of the tank has a good bit of rust in there. Ive seen some people talking about how to clean that out so I'll search for that info.
Also note the swinger bolt in the pic... I will be looking at fixin that as well. Tons of play in the swinger.

So I think Im gonna start ordering some stuff for it:
Carb rebuild kit
Throttle cable
Air filter
Something to clean and seal the tank

This is prolly one that is borderline worth saving as far as what I'll have into it I could have just bought one that was in better shape to start with. But hey rebuilding it I will appreciate it more.

If anybody has a kicker for an 86 200x please let me know.

Also... How do I modify the thread header, I want to change it slightly.

Thanks

Hi Seabass, welcome buddy!

350 seems a fair deal to me for an 86 and BTW, I love those models .

The grinding, where is it at exactly ? It may be the bearings in rear swingarm carrier are shot and that in turn adds play which will make the axle run a bit crooked while riding.

Could be just as simple as the axle lock nut being loose but I doubt it but who knows till you look!

Is it any of those related parts to the axle where you see it ?

It's possible the front bearings are shot too though. Paint it up too dude, that will make the machine look much better for sure!

If it was mine, the whole swingarm assembly would come off and hopefully the swingarm bolt will slide out for you but that X looks like a canidate for the typical siezed swingarm bolt, so let us know how it goes, if you take my advise and remove it that is.

The kicker shaft .... to me that looks like too much is missing and the kicker won't function proper ?? I would replace it but that's me.

I have a 200X kicker I think that is in useable shape, not sure why I even have it or what year it is for, I will have to hunt it down and get back to you on that.

Sealing the tank, you can either Red Kote it or Kreem it, I used both at one time or another and the main thing to MAKE SURE before you pour both products in is that it isn't TOO thick or thin but far better to be on the thin side for sure or you'll be there hours  trying to get it to flow around tank.

Red Kote is on ebay, Kreem at a lot of cycle shops, in my area anyway.

Here is more info on it .........

You didn't have to tell us that, I'll bet that happens to EVERYONE on here that buys badly needed TLC ones.

Still though, you CAN if you want have that looking really nice, all up to you, TAKE THAT SWINGARM OFF THOUGH!!!! (YOU LIKE SURPRIZES DON'T YOU ? :D ) :beer

motoman110
11-08-2007, 09:25 PM
check the valve clearance too, that can cause poor idleing and poor power. and when they are run for a long time with tight valves it causes carbon to build up on the valve and valve seat, so if they are tight and u adjust them properly that carbon will eventually burn off and it will run better yet.

Yeah the swinger needs to come off. Hard to see in the pic but between the rear sprocket and the swinger that part looks beat on. I think thats the rear bearing.

Thanks for the info and I appreciate the encouragement.

but on my R, the kicker shaft can only be dealt with by splitting the case.
depends on the design.

The power lines on rt 58 lead to EVERYWHERE!!!!!

Drive around that area and you'll find where they cross other side streets. I ride from home or park by the Plymouth airport.

We have about 10 guys riding this Sunday.

Get it running and register it.

Man its been a while since any updates... Mostly because so far the only thing Ive done is buy parts for this beast. Lesson #1 about buying a trike... Do not go to look at it at night. Turns out the frame was tweaked, swing arm was egged out ant the tank was rustier than my old Dodge Dart.

Things Ive bought so far:
Frame
Swing arm
Swing arm bearring kit
Swing arm skid plate
Tank
Kick starter
Rear brake resi and line
Full Super Trapp Exhaust

In a couple of weeks everything is going out to get PC'd. I figured what the heck if Im doing a frame swap might as well purdy her up.

I am still in need of the kicker spindle if anyone has one.

SeaBass8

Yep, it's your bearing. I have an 86 200x and had the same problem. It appears your bearing carrier is chipped on the left side there. It's going to be very hard to get the dust seal to hold(and not spin with the axle). Mine was like this, and I ended up using a contact cement and an RTV silicone to hold the dust seal in place. If you're not up for that, you should look into getting a nice used bearing carrier(which might be hard to find). You could always go this route- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RAD-Bearing-Carrier-HONDA-ATC-200X-Tapered-H3_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43972QQihZ012QQitemZ 220104827672QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
little expensive for my taste though. Anyways good luck on the build. My swingarm built is incredibly seized up, you can probably expect the same.

OMG are you guys kidding me?

I truly had the WORST nightmare axle removal EVER with my 86 200X this past weekend. I have heat, presses, pullers, BFh's and nothing, I mean nothing worked. I had to cut off the axle nut assy and the brake rotor hub. Cut them off and destroyed them. There was no way out, I was 3 hours deep into an axle removal and I gave in to the cutoff wheel.

All I really cared about was the axle and the carrier was already junk....

All in all, it was a terrible experience.

Itrike
05-06-2008, 06:05 PM
yea i had a hard time with mine also . 2 1/2 houres heat /pen oil repete. was using a 24" pipe wrench finally got it and was able to reuse the antifade nut again, but it aint pretty. I also am going to use silacone to hold the seal in place as i have some carrier damage also. hope this will work if not i'm going for the rad carrier.

John, most guys put a clear on there to rpotect the polish. Sometimes the clear dulls the finish.... If you do a search on the site I think a few guys have done a pretty good guide that may help you....

I wonder if they could be powder coated clear over that? that would be ideal as it would be durable. I'll try something polished for you sometime in the oven.

Scored an NOS motor or as close to NOS as you can get. Couple of dingers here and there but barely ever run. Got it from a salvage place through the auction site. Not sure if he bought it from a Honda dealership back in the day as scrap or what but he said it was sitting on a shelf in his wharehouse for a long time.

Again...... I'm just gonna say it that you OBVIOUSLY had some good karma going for you and you deserve it!!; especially with your situation and budget..... I cannot believe none of the collectors dropped 1000$ on that engine?? I would have bid a G without hesitation......

I have 8 of them, numerous 87 shafts and I just couldn't see buying it and that was BEFORE I got layed off  But for that money, I would have bid on it, but I would have felt bad - I can't be that much of a "parts hoarder"!!

I'm really glad for you John and if I can help with the rest of it, let me know!! I'm home and layed off ya know!!

SeaBass8
01-24-2009, 08:39 PM
Yeah I was definetly lucky to be able to get it. I guess thats one good thing about the economy being in the tank is that people are digging up stuff to sell to come up with some cash flow.

Over 700 parts listed if you search "200x" on fleaBay

I got a few more things to get before I can really think about putting this thing together. Mostly the parts to rebuild the front forks and rear swing arm from SH.

Then I need to rebuild the rear shock and get my tank re-done. Oh and wheels and tires.

I'm sure I'll be stopping by soon DC.

Thanks :beer

SeaBass8

^^^lol!

This build has been trial and error... Mostly error. I botched the installation of my steering stem bearings (AllBalls). I put the lower bearing on the steering stem but when I mounted it it was binding. I think I need a spacer on the bottom? These specific bearings are only sold by AllBalls so had to order a whole new kit.

I got my tank back and also decided to go with a NASA axle.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/SeaBass888/TankandAxle.jpg

Next step is to place another order with Service Honda. Mostly little stuff.

On a personal note the job interview didnt go so well. About ten minutes in the president of the company asked me what my salary range is and as soon as I told him he stood up and said thanks for coming in. I was dumbfounded because it was what I consider a very reasonable range for what I do (tech support). Needless to say he is a dick.

So the build goes on... And on.... And on..... lol

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

WOW!! John, fantastic axle!! Is it for the 86 200X or some of the others that can work with small changes.............I don't give it all away until I HAVE MINE!!

Looks absolutely fantastic thus far John!! Patience has been quite worthwhile........ I'll have to show you the tricks too KEEP these bearing and seal surfaces like new for YEARS to come even with water entry.........................

Nice job John, I admire you for many reasons :beer

Lets keep it nice but short of a "garage queen"!! Some wear and tear is to be expected.

Your welcome to it hang out as we assemble her.......

Maybe run some clean upped , old rear fenders on the local rides, even the stock seat. I have spare stuff too you can run on the beat rides Johnny.

I promise not to shoot rocks intentionally at you :naughty:

We'll get it figured out John.........

You gotta have call me about that axle, it's a piece of GOLD!!!

SeaBass8
06-10-2010, 01:03 PM
Thanks guys!

Yeah that axle is for the first gen 200X but to use it in the '86 you will need to order different seals because its different than stock for the 86. I was able to get them locally.

No worries this thing is gonna be a rider, infact I cant wait to ride it!

Couple of things to keep in mind when going with a 1st gen 200X axle in the 2nd gen X is you will need to order new axle seals. The inside diameter of the seal needs to be 2mm smaller to accommodate the first gen X axle and you need to make some clearence for the sprocket bolts. I shaved down the bolts and knotched out the carrier to make room. Hopefully the sprocket lines up correctly. I'm pretty sure it will.

Dirtcrasher

I guess you were tied up today?

UI have those seals if you didn't get them already......

"NOTCHED the carrier!!" I would have spun it on the lathe for ya......

Looking good John :beer

Looking sharp Seabass, I am donating a headlight shell to be reproduced for the 86-87 200X . Fullbore Inovations will be making these and I will be shipping the donor shell to them this week. They should be sharp ,they will come in red, white, etc but they might be made to order depending on the color you want. This is a long time coming.

Hopefully there a bit smoother........

You guys haven't seen nothing yet! :D

SeaBass8
08-16-2010, 09:33 PM
Oh I'm gonna ride her. No worries.

The forks seem to work good but I notice that they don't fully extend without lifting up the front end a little. Maybe a 1/2 inch to an inch. I'm thinking about putting in some PVC spacers. Maybe that will help a little?

Dirtcrasher
08-16-2010, 09:55 PM
That one tight bushing doesn't help..... BUT, too late to swap it now, you were only trying to do a "good" thing........

I only installed spacers to help stop bottoming off of bigger leaps, the stockers should return fully extended. It may take 10 hours of wheeling, jumping and bouncing over stuff to wear it all in.

That's a nice trike buddy. I have a nice 86 that basically needs some cosmetics at this point. I spent how many months searching and restoring an 86-87 tank. I have only one issue, a nice rear fender with a stain in the side from te owner before me. He let the original tank leak into the fender :-(

Soooo, if the axle's for a 1st gen, is that a 1st gen swingarm, or are the '86 axles the same as the 1st gens?

Soooo, if the axle's for a 1st gen, is that a 1st gen swingarm, or are the '86 axles the same as the 1st gens?

2nd gen swinger. The axles are different from 1st gen to 2nd gen. This is an easy mod to do and if anyone has a 2nd gen 200X with axle issues I would go this route. Easy and cheap parts to get. When using 1st gen axle youll have to use 1st gen sprocket hub and brake hub parts. And youll have to shave the bearing carrier back a little. Also have mix and match seals.

Installed Hondaline rubber step covers. Love these tires. Slide so easy when turning and hook-up going straight.
