You guys that motox your 84 R's, do you feel with stock 13/42 gearing that it's geared right for a tighter track or too low or too high ?

I have a ton of F & R sprockets (came with machine) and have not ridden mine much at all to tell, so what do you recommend to start out with ?

Stock gearing should be good for almost any mx track unless you are insane skilled and can push the bike to it's limits without wiping out.

well for mx you are running a 18'' rear tire right?

well for starters go 1 up on the front to get you back close to stock gearing....after that it all depends on the track

Need to go up two teeth to match stock gearing. Reason beings 22" tires and your dropping down two sizes in tire. On my 82 I had to go to a 15 to match stock because of the 22" tires and 13-44 gears. On the 86 they came with 20" tires so we went to a 14 with the 18" tires and stock 13-39 gears.
Playing with numbers a 16 tooth would be closer then a 15 tooth to match stock on a 84.
Need to ask ATCTIM. See what he runs in his.
Start with 14 but I think you would settle for a 15

I completly forgot about that part of the equation and No, I have 20's on so to keep stock gearing I'd run a 14 up front or a 40 or so in rear ?

I find that 20" tires with stock gearing is excellent for MX. Although - I have never played with my gearing - it just seems to work real well the way it is - I see no need to change it up. Keep in mind - these machines had 22" tires stock - so it will give you a little more low end than stock.
