View Full Version : About ready to take apart 250SX rear brakes
The rear brake arm wont release the brakes enough when I use the hand brake...
I am assuming there is crap in the brake drum. Its a 1986 SX.
Any advice things to watch out for or make sure to do?
Is the cam a biiiitch to get out?

If they have never been replaced then i'm sure you will have a lot of junk in there. You shouldn't have too much problems with your brake cam since it moves. If it was frozen then yeah they are a *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited*.
I know the '85's and '86's have different rear ends, but on my '85 250es there are 2 screws on the brake drum that have to come out before the drum can be taken off. They are attached to the hubs. I would definitely use the manual since you have a lot more stuff to take off to get to the shoes.
Just don't get any grease on those brake shoes or on the inside of the drum. Don't forget to pop that brake cam out and re-grease it.
Is the cam suppose to slide out or does it need to be influenced?
MAn not having good luck at all.... The axel nut is standard threads right? Leftie Loosie correct. I cant get that FN nut off. Unbelieveable.

Did you take the cotter pin out of the nut?

You can use a piece of pipe as a breaker bar on those axle nuts. Thats what I used.

Just tap it with a hammer and it should come out. Hit it from left to right, looking at it from the rear. Be careful with the hammer because the cam has threads on that side for the brake lever.
cotter pin out and I have a pipe on the wrench and my 220lb butt reefing on it. Cant believe it wont come off!

I distinctly remember using my 1/2 impact wrench on mine.
