I don't see it in my manual and I just read yet another auction that claimed their 85 350X is a 5 speed. Are they 5 speeds or not? Or are they the same 6 speed motor as the 86 350X aside from the stator/flywheel, the cam chain adjuster and the clutch cable routing?? I can't think of any other differences.....

I'm confused.....VERY confused :wondering

I need some 85 owners here..... I have seen countless people claim that there 85 is a 6 speed. The only external way I can tell an 86 from an 85 is the cam chain adjuster which protrudes from the head quite a bit longer.

Hey Mr Jcraig.. you get that dam kicker in yet? Take a road trip up here and I'll hook ya up... I saw you looking at another motor in classifieds, you better not give up that easy!!

EDIT - maybe SOME 85's were a 6 speed, maybe it was when they were made in 1985?? If that is the case, I wonder if they got the cam adj. upgrade too??

look at the honda brochure at the 3 wheeler world page. It tells all right there. i have the 85 cam tensioner lifter in mine but the 86 will work just the same.

Yeah there 6 speed's for sure as Swinehart showed with the documentation, and FYI there are more than 50 differences between the '85 and '86 350x model year's also..

I still would like to know why I have read so many times that an 85 is a 5 speed.....

50 Differences?? Elaborate please....

Stator, flywheel, rims, cam chain adjuster, front brake, clutch cable routing, swingarm, carrier, brake stay and plastic...

Ok, I'm done - what are the other 40??

I wonder if people are thinking about the 200x??Isnt the 85 a 5 speed then the 86 went to 6 speed??I better go check the 85 in my barn before I get linched!!!!!

Yep it's the 200X that changed from 85 to 86.

JESW... is right, I think the people that have posted that "their" or "my" 85 350X is a 5 speed don't actually OWN one!! I've honestly seen it so much that recently a friend wanted an 85 and I said, "yeah but you won't have 6th gear" thats what led me to this topic. I was convinced that maybe the earlier 85 models had 5 gears and then Honda changed it.

But anyhoot, MYTHBUSTERS has answered the question and ALL 350X's have 6 speeds.

And S-Puppy, I'm still interested in the 50 differences your aware of that I didn't mention. That is if you have the time....

EDIT - I looked at the link. Never knew that the oil pump pickup changed, that is a great upgrade!! I like the 86 better anyhow but a 350X is still a sweet machine any year. Too bad some guys can't find 6th gear LOL....

the 50 differences are mostly odd little thing like a guesset here or a tang there on the frame

Dirtcrasher, just do a search and you'll find the difference's,if ya can't find em' we can start a thread on it but somewhere in our wealth of knowledge on 3ww it can be found.Like swinging said there were alot of frame mod's and I'm almost 100% sure that there are 3 different type's of the 350X frame also.Being an 85 -85 1/2 - and the 86.

Thanks bud, yeah I don't care about the little BS. It's the bigger improvements like the oil pump which is something I learned today :w00t:

I think I mentioned most of the other "important" ones. Of course were getting off topic now and I can see the reasoning behind the other changes but I wonder why the stator and flywheel were changed? Maybe is was accomodate the extra rotating mass of the 6th gear
