I've seen a number of people on this board talking about WANTING to do an autox conversion, but very little about how it went, what the problems were, and how they liked it afterwards.
My buddy's 200x is smoking pretty bad now, and we have to kick the sh*t out of it to get it started, so he wants to rebuild the engine. He's given me permission to do an autox conversion ,as long as the 200x isn't altered so we can't go back to a stock engine if desired. I've got the engine and I'm working out a few other details to get all the parts, but I'd love to hear what other people have experienced. Show me pics too, if you got 'em!

hello
i believe you are mistaken a auto x conversion is when u put a 185s or a 200s AUTOMATIC in the 200X. i m not sure you can make a 200x motor an automatic.

As long as the 200x is from the '83 to '85 years, the 185 and 200 ( not big red or e or m) will drop in with no mods to the frame. The only mod you have to do is fab. up the rear brake linkage. Their are threads some where on this.

I had to reread my post to see how someone thought I was trying to make a 200x motor into an automatic....I do see it was badly written, so my apologies. What I meant was that since the original engine is going to be pulled to be rebuilt, I want to drop a 200s engine in there and see how it does. If we don't like it, we will go ahead with the 200x engine rebuild. Personally, if we get it working, I don't think he'll want to go back. Where we're at in Iowa there's a lot of close riding, through ditches and in the trees, and it makes an automatic a better choice. I'm always doing stuff on my SX that he has trouble with because of the need to be clutching.

I've done it. Worked purfectly. If your x has a good bottom end, then just do a top end on it. Clutches aren't that hard to use.

im just about done with my auto x. turned out ok i think the biggest issue was the rear bake set up. you may wanna bring the left foot peg out a bit for clearance between the shifter and foot peg. also if i remember correctly you will need to extend the shifter. not sure though. id have to look.

I beleive the 200M will fit if you remove the electric start

We love our Auto X - it is a super cool conversion. We also added a Goki Electric Start kit to it.
The rear brake issue was easily overcome. The ATC200 Goki Kit fit on the 200X chassis was a little more challenging than the brake set up.
It is a great trail bike and the wife rides it all the time. So much fun to trail on..... I really can;t say anything bad about the conversion. It was also really fun to build.

Mines a 83 200x with 200s engine. Supertrapp pipe, 200x carb, still a fair bit of work to do, hoping to be finished by christmas or there abouts. I'll be using it for woods and trails mainly. Its getting new plastics, new paint scheme, maybe new rims.

i am doing a auto-x conversion also. the rear brake is pretty easy to do if you have a welder or a friend with one. only other thing you need is the intake off a 185 or a 200. mufflers are the same so just use the 200x stuff.
no other mods are needed unless you choose to go custom like i have.

olkskool83 you got it backwards you need the 200x intake and exhaust.
200x intake is angled different
having all the 200s wiring would be easier also you'll have to cut and splice up the 200x harness at the motor plud. they are different

Yeah I've seen an AutoX in our town. Some guy who lives out in the boonies, I was talking to him about it and he said he "dropped" the 200S motor in there when his 200X died. It seems to fit together like it was meant to be, you just stick it in there, use the 200X exhaust and intake parts and the 200s electricals and you should be able to do it all in about 2 hours if you're good.
