I'm switching over to a taper roller bearing kit I got for 84 R, do I have to take the triple to a shop and have stock one pressed off stem and other one pressed on?
I see at least the stem is clamped in instead of pressed in so at least that should make it easier for them, I imagine ?

you gotta cut them off...
Here's a real good thread about that:

That's a great link Chris, thanks!! :beer .......... but those guys did it the hard way, I'm almost positive the right way to take the bottom race off is to take to shop and they can press stem off, then race off using a hydraulic press.
If I would do it myself, I'd take the stem out of the trips, see, on the R it is pinched in trip by a bolt.
Maybe someone will come on saying they used a pipe and slid it over stem (once removed from trip), then pounded it off.
I'd rather just pay 10 bucks or so and have the shop do it and I see ypou agree with me too!
" lol... I just saved myself the headache and dropped the trips along with the new bearings off at the local guy.. Only a couple bucks so it was well worth it. "
I'm not sure if on the 200S's and so fourth, if the stem is welded on or pressed on ?
I imagine they used the grinder on your because the stem would be a pain to remove ? You have a pich bolt set up ?

iv never had a problem getting those off
normaly a screw driver and a hammer will do it but a press will be the easyest
i wouldnt take the stem pipe off just the race

I'm sure you could get a shop to do it.
When I did the swap on my motorcycle I was able to get that race off by prying it up with a big flat tip screw driver. I first removed the seal then pried around the race working my way around the stem several times very slowly moving the race up.

How did you install new one then ? Same way ?
........and of course my bearings are two different #'s and of course they don't tell you which one goes where
I might be able to tell once out of package, maybe one is of a larger height ?

Well at a shop I'm sure they remove stem, then simply press it out.

Hey Huffa.. where'd ya get those bearings. I thought you needed rear axle bearings?
I'm dreading the thought of having to take my swinger off to switch them nylong bushings.. I should of did it right when I had everything apart the first time.

I pounded the new one by tapping it down with a PVC pipe and hammer.

I do need them (axle bearings) and just got them today and you know what just occured to me? ........ The trip you see in pic is part of a set I won ( threads in pinch clamps are screwed up on one on machine), I didn't take the old ones off yet, watch me take them apart and it ALREADY has them

I use black pipe or EMT pipe (lots of ID's and OD's for a variety of sizes) for pressing or pounding things back together. If it has a bearing surface like a lower race, I have pieces of brass or bronze bushings/pipe that I use to keep from messing up ground surfaces.

It just dawned on me, if I loosen the pinch bolt (84 R talkin here) at bottom, take a block of wood and put on top of stem and give a few wacks, the stem very well might come out bottom and the race will slide right up the stem. Oiled it up good on bottom also.
20 seconds, I kid you not and the job was done, SUPER EASY!! :Bounce
Best of all the stem has a brim on it and you just reinstall till brim bottoms out on trip, even has a edge on trip so the flat part of brim goes against the edge, in other words the rotation of it goes back exactly how it was too!
Thank you Honda for such a good design!! !! :beer

What's EMT pipe ?

Electrical conduit or tubing. Real cheap and lots of sizes at Homie D.....
EDIT - Be careful with that upgrade kit. If it's ALLBALLS then it doesn't have clear instructions and lots of guys either use or or do not use certain washers provided in that kit. IDK why but there have been some posts in problems with everything working out after installation of the kit. Mostly due to the lack of clear instructions for each model.....

FOR SURE, they don't have ANY instructions (that's BS man), it's going to be a complaint that I'm going to address to them tomorrow. I have it figured out but want to be a 100% sure.
The front row is balls, rear stock of course (both for bottom of stem). Washer (balls is a lot thicker), seal (different from stock), then bearing is the order they go. It looks to me like the bearing should be inset in the seal (center pic) and not lay on top. which is flipped around like in the pic (R pic) where I off centered it so it's clearer as to what i'm referring too, you agree ?
