cable adjusted wrong or bad,, idle screw too high, C clip could have come off,intake boot ripped,intake gaskit, the idle screw should be around 15-1700 rpm, the cable should have a 1/8 slack before the throttle starts to open.then adjust idle..

If it revs up enough yea ayour kill switch won't do you any good sometimes, they call that detonation and that's defiantly not good!! Be careful

could it rev out so much that the kill switch won't work?

I hear this symptom is known as desiling. Its when the fuel supply has been shut off, when there is no more gas. The engine will self-combust from pre-ignition and pressure/heat until its done using all the fuel and vapors left in the cylinder+carb and bowl.

If you get the idle screw, and cables figured out and the thing still reves, could be a base gasket........

If it had a clogged or bad fuel pump, thing shouldnt run at all, much less rev up high....................

First I would make sure your getting proper fuel, not enough will cause it to rev high. Then check your throttle and see if you have just a little play. If not adjust the cable so you do, simple stuff that takes 2mins to check. Then go onto the air screw and checking the needle.

could it rev out so much that the kill switch won't work?

That happened to me once when the vacuum fitting for the fuel pump poped out of the cylinder base. (lower right side, see photo) The rig was really hot and raced wide open until it ran out off fuel. Kill switch wouldn't stop it so I pulled the plug cap and it still ran until the fuel was gone. Freaked me right out. It was so hot in the combustion chamber that it didn't need spark to light. This was on pump gas. :eek:

other options;
throttle cable too short
carb too lean
air leak; carb to boot, reed cage, base gasket, hose to vacuum fitting..
needle not seated
(most was already covered but thought I through it in anyways)

I would also check the pilot air screw..(the other small screw on the side of the carb) I set them to the motor when idleing. turn out till it picks up a little and then back in1/4 turn..shut off check how many turns it is out..more than 3 .go to biger pilot jet... but carb tuneing is a hole other thing..mabey the guy beforew you fussed with it. still get it running and spray a little wd40 around intake boot and gaskets also base gasket..lisen for changes..crank seals come to minde also..
