Big Bore? a go or no go?

well, i have heard that turning the 84 R to a 300 CC big bore will make the motor slightly sluggish, compared to the instant throttle response, etc. etc. that it has now.

my question is, what kind of power gains are to be expected with a 300CC big bore, and most importantly, where should i take this to have it done? a engine ship i assume........

i also want to get it ported, polished, i have a racing head laying around, and ill need a carb (whats a good recommended size?)

can i do this to an aircooled R without an overheating problem?
The head is a porcupine head= better cooling and higher compression.

i also have a shatty stroker crank (possibly rebuildable) with the jug spacer plate.

would i get some good power gains with all of this? i am looking for a dependable machine that wont need rebuilt after every ride, all while having hella amounts of power.

also, have i overlooked any other/better mods?

As far as bigbore kits for the 84r mines a hondaline 300r kit and it's not sluggish anywhere in the rpm range, as a matter of fact this kit will greatly improve the power of your machine and if properly tuned with the right carb and pipe you'll be eating modded 450s for lunch like I do with mine.

I have one, not sure if the cylinder is any good yet though, I can take it to a shop and check, if your interested that is.

Don't have a piston though, just cylinder and head.

Have no clue what I want for it till I see what it needs as far as boring or a sleeve or whatever.

You would probably want a larger carb too then, 36-39mm is what seems common on here with the 300 guys.

You can still get all the parts new but you can't get it as a kit so they jack up the price big time the cylinder costs $455.66 and the head is $177.00 piston and rings will cost you $131.27. I got one that I'm using on another project bike that I picked up on ebay for $190.00 with shipping and it's on the stock bore. You'll know when you se one because the fins are squared of and it has 7 studs for the head instead of 6.

Every now and then I hear on here the pistons are not availble any more, so you know for sure that you can still get them?

I know I can get a stock bore piston and rings from Honda and the last bore but I would just run a honda for the standard size and when that's spent switch to a wiseco witch requires a $60.00 cylinder mod, I know of a place that can do the mod and sell you the piston both. He also sells gaskets for the head and base.

and what is the shop that can do the mod and get the piston?
do they do stuff through the mail?

so i found a complete 300 big bore kit, all ready to go with all gaskets, piston, cylinder and head for 568.00 complete.
is this a fair price for something like this?

also, will the reeds on my current stock motor work with this? or will i need to get new ones?

and a 36-39mm carb will be best for this set-up?

Larger the carb, the more you'll have a screamer top end and lose some low - mid range.

I prefer a middle of the road carb size at 36 but I think I'm the only one running one that "small", most are 39'ers I think .

If you don't have Boyesen reeds in it now, get a set of either of these Boyesen reeds, which ever you prefer, they are on ebay all the time.

i ordered the big bore kit for 568.95 shipped.
hopefully this will give me the much wanted, but not needed power boost.......i mean, i just started riding this thing.....well, i have about an hour on it. :O
damn rod knock, forcing me to rebuild. i mean, since its apart, go big or go home, right? ;)

i wont be able to get a bigger carb for awhile. will it run fair on the factory carb for now? if someone has a 36-39mm carb they want to get rid of for cheap, PM me :)
