Well, here she is. We think she is a 1974 ATC 70. No compression. It will start and run for a minute with starting fluid. We are going to pull the top end and re-build it and see how she runs. You guys think this is worth saving? I have very little money into it...traded a graphics kit for a shee:D

Any good places to get parts for the engine? Will the newer 70 engine parts work in this 74 model? We want to due a full blown resto on it becuase it is so old and vintage.

Check out http://www.dratv.com/, he has parts and Repro fenders some of the newer stuff will fit but not everthing, most of the top end stuff is the same (pistons rings etc) Also http://www.atcheaven.com/ has some nice stuff. You have a great start for a resto there, looks like its not missing any of the key hard to find parts, like the exhaust, rear cover, pull start (73-74 is different then the rest) and the skid plate. Good Luck, will help if I can.

Thanks guys.It is all there and original. The seat pan is mint,so that is a plus.
Yes Blue,it has the Oem rear cover on it.The front headpipe is rough,So hopefully we can find a replacement or make one from scratch.
The engine parts were our main concern.
We will start on the engine this week hopefully.

pretty sweet. If you need piston rings i have like 10-15 sets of them in a variety of sizes. I also have ONE stock bore piston with rings. I think the majority if not all of them i have are old school cycle craft.

Well I have a 1983 ATC 70 has ok compression I cleaned the carb new plug etc.
And the only way of it starting for about 15 feet is to spray engine starter into the carb and air cleaner???

Does anyone have a good pic of this 1974 atc70?
I want to start on this project, and would like a pick of a OEM one,so I can get the colors and such correct. When we searched the net for it,we could not get a good pic.

Ok well,We dug into this little guy tonight, and here is what we have so far.
The intake valve is not seating. There is a bunch of stuff in the exhaust port of the head,That looks like massive carbon build -up or melted aluminum.
2 broken exhaust studs,
Stripped shifter shaft,
and stripped chain adjuster assm,
The plastic cover for the chain is busted(cracked)
Now here are my questions. We are definately going to abandon the head,Becuase of all the valve work that needs done, not to mention, the plug hole has been heli-coiled,and poorly at that.
I am wondering, would I be better off to get a replacement engine with the 4 speed for this, and tackle the original engine rebuild later?
Does Lifan make a engine for this application? How much would one be?
What are my options here?
Or should I just round up the parts to get this engine going again?
The good news is,the pullstart is in excellent mechanical condition, which I understand is hard to find.
I will get some tear-down pics up later tonight.
Any input here?
We are going to restore this, but not 100%original,just a nice clean slightly custom camp cruiser.

i'm not sure what exact motors lifan makes, but i do know that it is often about the same price to buy a replacement lifan vs rebuilding the honda motor.

Lut a lifan 90 in that sucker with an auto tranny. It'll rip!!!
And Lifan does make a 70
Stay away from the lifs.Personal pref.
Go with a 110 Honda cylinder head if you can.

why do you say to stay away from the lifans? from what i understand a lot of the parts interchange with the hondas. I know that blue, kasey, i think vealmonkey possibly, and a few others have had lifans with very few if any problems at all with them.

Where are they made?

Where are they made?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifan ;)
I "try" my hardest to not buy things made in China.
Not that there bad or anything. They may be better than a Honda motor.lol

Well, if you really wanted to build the "old skool" 70, you would find yourself an sl70 engine and add the 88cc or 110cc kit. The sl70 is kickstart and clutch. The 110cc engine would be nice with the kickstart. I wish lifans were made in the USA too, but, they're not.

For ease I would throw in a Lifan and do a pull start conversion(it does take a little work from what I hear). The motor does bolt right in. You could go with Elec. Start if you want to fab a battery box but I am not shure where you would put it. I will have to think on that, lol. I have not tried an CRF50 "up" exaust on one yet I think you should stick with a "under" pipe. The 74 exhaust was only used on that bike and differs from the 73 and the newer stuff.

Well little bit more bad news possibly. I think the frame may be bent up front in the main bar. I'm gonna try to get some pics of it up tomorrow, and see what you guys think. I checked into the Lifan big bores on Ebay, and they seem really fair priced.

you mean the backbone of the frame? if so it's no biggy. Blue27 can find you the thread on how to straighten it ;) basically you put a jack between the front axle and where the motor mounts, which pushes the front end forward and straightens the frame out. I did it on my 85 and had to heat the frame a little bit.

The Lifans are indeed very well priced. Hooper Imports had ones on sale going for 300 dollars (125's with manual tranny)

Ok well Here goes.
Our plans were to restore this guy to near mint.
But rounding up nice OEM parts became a challenge.
With the economy, and the way things are we decided to turn this into the "budget"70 build.
We decided to just get it mechanically reliable, so we could use it at the races and for campground cruising. We eventually will restore this, now the foundation is all there.
Thanks everyone for all the help and info they provided.
We ended up with a 83 engine in a trade deal.
Syko Restored our tank, and it turned out great. As you can see the machine really dont deserve that tank right now.
I found another decent seat cheap, but I need to make a new cover for it or the original seat that was on it, But we haven't had time to do the seat.
We used the porta power to straighten the frame.
Installed the 83 4 speed engine.
Mosh went thru the original 74 carb and got it running good.
Garage boy helped out with a few things like points and some other things.
Some nicer handlebars and other items from some swap meets.
All said and done we have about 150$ out of pocket, into this whole thing.
We didnt want to spray paint this . So it looks rough still.
Later we will tear it down and get the PC work done and hopefully make it nicer.
The only thing not mechanically correct as of now, is someone welded the left rear hub to the axle.We are figuring the hub is shot, so once we round one up Mosh will attack that deal.

Not too shabby. Now it's time for the cosmetics. Andrew Hyman on here has the fenders in the proper red if you need them.

Looks like fun. I bought a 74 for 1upfront when he was five years old. I think I'm responsible for his trike addiction. He along with every other kid in the neighborhood rode the wheels off of that thing for ten years or so and then came the 250r.
hey im always game for more paintwork!
