I have searched and also looked through my haynes shop manual for my 83R and I got NOTHING!!!! How does it come out? I heated it up, took the suspension off, tires/wheels off, and brakes + anything else that looked like it might possibly prevent the bolt from sliding out. I have gone so far as to smash it with a sledge hammer. it will NOT budge. I tried unscrewing it from the opposite side where there is nothing more than an awkward looking cirle with 2 flat sides to grip an adjustable wrench onto. nothing. The bolt moves with the swing arm when I raise and lower it.
Am I missing something here? This is the last part of my bike that needs to be dissesembled for powder coating and Im starting to get angry!! any thoughts would be much appreciated here

Yeah, they suck! I had an '83 250r years ago that WOULD NOT budge. I literally spent hours jacking with it. I went to my local shop to see what the secret is. After talking with a couple of mechanics and them asking me if I tried this and that, they both said the secret is a Sawzall. With the frame nearly stripped to nothing, I was BARELY able to gain enough access to cut the bolt out. But, that was only a fraction of my problems. I had to cut the bolt in 4 places to remove the swinger(and it took about 4 blades). After that, I had 2 sections of the cut bolt that were stuck in the swinger horns. I had a HELLUVA time getting the cut pieces out of there. They're lodged in there so tight because when the swinger bearings go bad, a groove wears into the bolt making it virtually impossible to remove. That is one sucky job. I don't envy you at all. I absolutely HATED to cut it out, knowing what a replacement bolt costs, but I believe there was no other way of getting it out. Fortunately, I found a good one on ebay for $25 and snagged it. Two years ago, my dealer told me he could order me one for $54. Even that is freaking ripoff for a bolt!

never pulled 1 out but did any of you guys try using a air chisel with the pick end?

hello
you could drill a small hole in the swing arm (the part where the bolt goes thru) and filling the tube with pb blast so that u can get to some of the rust inside the swing arm its only a suggestion but i would try this before i go beating on a bolt that is hard to find.
if it takes two or three cans of pb blast or some other product its still cheaper than the bolt. good luck

This is a good reminder to remove and re-grease our swinger bolts while we still can.
Just today I had to cut the bolt that was holding a suspension linkage piece to a dirt bike frame. It's hard to imagine how locked together two pieces can get that are suppose to be free until you've knee deep in it. There was a collar inside there that had welded itself to the bolt. No amount of pounding made a bit of difference. I didn't need the bolt so cutting it wasn't too painful. But had I not been ok with that I'm not sure what I would have done.
The access hole for penetrating oil is a good idea. If I had a hydraulic press I would have tried to jig up some way to press it out. I tried a big C-clamp but after a certain point it the clamp would just flex and threaten to snap. My frozen bolt was only about 4 or 5 inches long.

Spread the frame, use a cutoff wheel or sawzall and cut the bolt. Then deal with it in a hyd press.
Or beat it, heat it, soak it, smash it, beat it, heat it, soak it, smash it, beat it, heat it, soak it, smash it, beat it, heat it, soak it, smash it, repeat etc etc.
I have also ground the head part of the bolt off the smash in the other direction.
By the way as posted above, I have seen a good air chisel remove lots of things that didn't seem to budge with a BFH....
But, if it does move, make sure you grind off the mushroomed end you have been smashing.

Mine came off with no work at all, just ride around with the nut loose for a while. I pulled mine out with my hand.

same thing happened to me on my 86 250R. what happens in the swing arm bearings seize to the pivot bolt from years of not receiving grease. if this is happening just think what its doing to your swinger? something got to give and 9 times out of 10 its the swinger resulting in cracking. lucky for me i had a spare bolt and was able to cut mine out with a cut off wheel.

I ran the bike up to a local bike shop, after telling them what bike i needed the swinger bolt pulled on they simply said "we are NOT interested!". They showed me a drill bit they had to use to drill out a swinger bolt on a cr125, basically drive from either side into the bolt and then bust it off.
Im going the air chisel route tomorrow, have to buy one since ours is already busted. I have smashed the head of this bolt to hell, its beyond repair. Least of my concerns now though, I will buy another one.
Im afraid that if I use a press that the frame will twist up like a pretzel.. The engine is still there too, the last bolt I need to remove to get the engine out is harder to reach and I figured on removing the swinger to get to it. not sure anymore, its been a few days since I looked it over to see how it will come apart.
I dont want to get the sawzall out just yet, trying to work smarter not harder lol
I want to salvage the swinger and frame, the bolt is toast i just need it apart so I can start sandblasting/powder coating/ and chroming.

If you dont care about the bushings or internal parts, do what I said. Ride it for a little while with the bolt loosened. Be sure to hit some good bumps too. Mine was completely seized last winter and no pounding, heating or soaking would free it. But then one day I noticed it was a little loose and went home to tighten it and ended up pulling the bolt out while it was on the jack stands with no effort at all. But another factor could have been that my bushings were gone and it gave it extra play to rattle out.

We always use anti seize compound on everything on our machines. 1upfront had to have the bottom motor mount bolt on one of his Rs drilled out. That sucks.
