About a week ago I pulled my carb to clean it out. (I had gotten some gas with water in it and it was stopping up my carb) While I had it appart I was looking inside it and noticed that the surface before and after the slide looked like it was cut by drilling two holes one above the other and that there was a high part between the two. So I thought I could get a good amount more air flow if I ground it down.

I don't know if you can see what I mean in the picture, it's not real good quality because it was took with my cell phone. But here it is.

Like I usually do I got carried away and before I knew I had been grinding on my carb for a hour or so... so I finished the porthing and started polishing it with some metal polish and an old shirt.

While I was putting it back together I got the idea of leaving the choke off to get a little better air flow, I mean I never use it anyway.

I had noticed a couple weeks ago on my 185s that there was quite a bit of excess weld inside the headpipe so I took the pipe off the 200 and sure enough it was the same way. I don't have a before picture of it, but I ground the weld out of it and polished the inside and it turned out real nice.

I then drilled out my main (108) jet to about 112-116, put it all back together raised the needle to one notch from all the way out moved the air screw 2 full turns out from all the way in. then took off the air box lid. And finally took out the little cover on the bottem of my exhaust can.

Started it up and it ran awesome!!! Lots more power and slightly better throttle responce.

But now I have a problem... It's not noticable in 1st, but in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th my clutch seems to be slipping. when I first open it up in the lower rpm's it's fine... but as the rpm's rise it is really noticable...

What do I need to do to get this to stop?
I don't know really anything about clutches... but is there an adjustment? or do I need a new clutch? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, Thanks. Any suggestions on where to buy the plates and springs? Soon i'm going to need a complete engine rebuild, while I'm at it I want to go with high comp piston and a cam, going to shoot for about 20-25 hp. will I need different clutch springs to handle that?

If its not slipping too bad, clean up your fiber plates by rubbing them on a flat, course surface to de-glaze them, then add one extra steel plate to the pack on reassembling. This should fix your problem if your'e on a budget. Make sure you have a bit of free play on your clutch lever as well.

Nice work on the carb. I think I'll be doing the same thing to mine soon. Sad thing is mine doesn't like to start without the choke so I'll probably have to leave it in. Might have to pull the exhaust off and check that as well.

I had an XR80 several years back that slipped like no tomorrow anytime I was on the throttle. Took the cover off and the clutches looked about as good as new but I went ahead and swapped them out with some good used clutches (I know how bad that sounds) from a 200s along with the springs and it never slipped again. I could do 2nd gear burnouts on concrete at WOT and it wouldn't slip. For an 80 that little bike would scream.
