I jumped off the X after installing the exhaust yesterday and got down by the pipes to make sure I had a good seal and noticed my decompression cable is bobbing like a freaking sewing machine needle
This is not right is it? The bike runs great and was really easy to start before i put the exhaust on (I still need to rejet) but now it wants a little choke to start and it sputters when it starts.... but thats irrelevant, right? That cable end on top the valves should not move like a valve should it?

It's too tight and you might want to check your valve clearance settings.

This explains your need for a rubber hose..... LOL
As you kick it over it should stroke.
It all has to be hooked up and adjusted correctly. I've seen people manage to set the cam wrong on the kicker shaft. Then it doesn't relieve compression at the right time.

ha crasher - I don't know if that is as contributory as kicking it with slippery wet soles on my vans....
the valve adjustment is on target. they are a little loose but thats how I wanted them
I am pretty sure the previous owner put the kicker in the bike.. its either that or I need to re-adjust my cable huh?

(it was easier to start after I swapped carbs and dialed it in) so still not hard to start...

after adjusting it again the dc lever does not "sew" any more..
time to start getting that carb dialed in again
