View Full Version : Just got a 85 200X....what to do first?
NYC200x

Hey guys, I am new to the forums. I just picked up a 1985 Honda 200X trike locally for $600. Everything on the bike is fine except the headlight not working. The guy said it just needed a bulb but that wasnt the case. What do you think could be the problem with it? Bag switch? Bag harness?
Also, I would like to do some small mods to it. I want a new filter and exhaust first. I was thinking of a K&N filter and either a Cobra or DG exhaust. I also heard of people taking off the lids of the airbox...what does this do?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

go dg pipe. when you pop the lid it lets more air in. better air flow makes for a little more power. ooo yea we need pics man.

Ok, sounds good. I'll get some pics of it tomorrow morning.
Whats a good online site to order parts from? Do you have a link to it? Also, should I go with the K&N filter and which DG pipe should I go for?

Take the 2 screws of the back side of the switch cover and open it up. Spray a little wd40 on the inside of the switch. Sometimes a film of corosion builds up on the metal and wont complete the circuit when its on. After that just start tracing wires and making sure all the colors cordinate and are hooked up properly.

I sprayed the switch with some WD40, still not working. I am bidding on a new switch on ebay. Maybe my switch is bad. Hopefully a new switch will solve my problem.
What are other alternatives to lighting if I choose not to use the stock lighting?

I also wanted to say that my trike smokes a little bit from the exhaust...is this normal?
oldskool83
09-13-2007, 11:45 AM
normal...no rings are going, top end should be replaced prob.

09-13-2007, 11:57 AM
Welcome dude!
Yea for smoking on a 4 stroke that's not a normal nor good thing, def need to do a replac on the topend; rings, gaskets, etc. Only the 2 strokes smoke on a normal basis
it could be as minor as valve seals as well, I had a 200x (AKA THE JUNKYARD X) and it smoked like a cracked piston over oild 2 stroke! but sometimes all the smoke would go away, then a few rides later it would be smoking like a forest fire again! in my OP sell it and get a 2 stroke, there suposed to smoke some! and your almost allready used to it!!
NYC200x
09-13-2007, 02:13 PM
Well its not alot of smoke, just a small trail. Anyway, I'm going to bring it to a Honda dealer soon and get it looked at and see what it needs. Other then the smoke, it runs fine.
Dammit!
09-13-2007, 02:16 PM
Don't be surprised if you have trouble finding a Honda dealer that would be willing to work on it.
They aren't difficult to rebuild on your own. Hell I was only 12 or 13 years old the first time I did a top end rebuild on a 200x.
NYC200x
09-13-2007, 05:10 PM
What parts would I need to rebuild it? Is there a whole kit or do I buy parts individually?

I just picked up some rear tires. I bought them locally on Craigslist. They are ITP Holeshot HD tires on rims, not sure what kind though. The guy used them for 1/2 a season. I'm going to get them mounted tomorrow morning and I'll take some pics for you guys!
Edog, PM sent back!

So much for the tires/rims I just got, they dont fit. They dont line up by 1/8 or 1/4". Should I get my $120 refund back from the guy or should I keep them and just get new rims for them?

Sometimes a film of corosion builds up on the metal and wont complete the circuit when its on. After that just start tracing wires and making sure all the colors cordinate and are hooked up properly.WD40 is a horrible conductor and will only make the problem worse. Test your lighting coil and check out the prongs of the headlight socket, they usually turn green from corrosion or the wires pull out the back of them. Use battery terminal cleaner (AKA) contact cleaner to clean your electrical parts. When you're done apply dielectric grease so it doesn't corrode again.

So what should I do about these tires? If I decide to keep them, I just need new rims that will fit. Can someone send me a link of a rim that will fit the bike and the tire?

do you have the stock hubs on the bike? if so you need a set of rims that have the same bolt pattern as the hubs... if you want a wider rearend, you could always go with a set of 400ex rear hubs, give you 2inches on each side. i just have to ask though....where the heck in nyc do you ride a trike?

On the streets, lol. I got it for the winter just to ride around, but I heard of a few trails in NJ where you pay $20 and ride all day. Might try that out soon.
Anyway, I really want to get some new tires mounted. When I am looking for rims, what size would I need to work with this bike and the ITP tires?

You might want to slow down a little and wait on buying extras for your X. Maybe get a manual and read through it to familiarize yourself with your machine. Blowing $120 on tires that don't fit when you might have to spend $$$ on a top end rebuild.

How much is a top end rebuild?
I am going to keep the tires and just get rims that will fit. I need new tires/rims, my right rear tire has a leak in it.
Will a rim like this fit: http://www.powersedge.net/pages/catalogs/detail/16/690/1851/10263/all/0/0/2/12/12/1139/21268/steel-wheels.aspx

Ok, now will that rim fit my ITP tires? If I wanted to buy a rim, what do I need to look for? 4x110 bolt pattern? And how do I know what rim will fit the tires I have?
How is it to do a rebuild by yourself? Do you have to pull the motor off the frame?
what is the last number on the tires (20x11x9 18x12x8 22x12x10) like that the last number denotes the wheel size if its a 200x the wheel pattern is 4x110, the rebuild you will have to pull the motor out,
download a manual here and make sure you thank DAMMIT! for the manuals!!

The size is 20x11x9. So will those rims on ebay fit these tires?
I'll look into the manual and look for a rebuild kit soon. Is it hard to take the motor off? What needs to be disconnected?
read the manual about parts to discontect, yes those wheels will fit

Welcome to the Boards ...
SLOW DOWN ! ! ! .... Stop buying everything on site First off if you looking for Power you might want to sell your 200x & get a 250R or 350X
Second Don't blow money away like that , not knowing what the hell your buying - PACE your Self don't want you to get Burnt Out to fast - your in for a Money Pit ride !
Get your money back on the rims & tires , Go to a ATV store if your desperate to spend money on your New Ride .... if you can wait & would like to Save money shop on-line ....
Good Source - www.ebay.com just type in - ATC 200X
Tons of parts - Make sure you ask the Seller if this will fit your - 1985 200X
Just post up and we will help as much as we can

Can Some One Post pictures of a few ATC 200X -
about your trike smoking, let it ride! it may smoke for another 20 years! unless its making its own cloud system behinde you dont worry about it, plenty of trikes that age smoke alittle, get some wheels and a few other things and ride and enjoy it untill it really starts smoking or stops running all together!

Ok, I think I'm going to keep the tires I bought. I paid $120 for tires and rims, and the tires alone are about $60. I'll just get some rims that fit and I'll be set. Do I take rims and tires to a Honda dealer to get them mounted?
People are saying, save my money, but without tires, I can't ride! $120 isnt going to break my bank.
sykolincoln....you say get tires and a few more things...what do you suggest? I just need rims and get my headlight fixed.
Pics will come soon, I'm at work right now.
you should be able to take those wheels to any tire shop and gett them to bust them off and put another set on here I can get 4 sets done at the same time and only pay $20! as for riding, get some tires (wich you already got) get the usual new plug, change the oil, new air filter (UNI or K&N) since it is as old as it is you may want to change to clutch discs for new ones, alot of people think poor performance and think its a engine problem, when in fact a old worn clutch can cause alot of performance loss get with some of the NY guys here on the board and maybe one of them is close by to help you out, or even go ride with! good luck man!

Thnaks for the advice. I'll take the tires/rims I bought to a shop and have them pull the tires off. My friend has a set of rims, so maybe those will fit.
I already changed the plug and oil. Next will be a K&N filter, for now I'm running the trike stock, I just took off the airbox lid.
No worries about the clutch. The guy I bought it from just replaced the whole clutch before he sold it. He only rode a few hours with the new clutch.
Who here is from NY?
Also, pics will be posted tomorrow morning!!!
just make a post in the open forum for NY riders!!

Good news!! My friends rims fit the trike! They're a set of polished Douglas rims, brand new. He bought them and never used them, they didn't fit his quad. I'm going to get the ITP tires removed and mounted on these rims tomorrow! I will post pics after I swap the new tires on.

First things i would do would be:
400ex Hub Swap gives you two extra inches to your rear end.
Smaller Low Profile tires
Air Filter
Exhaust
XR200 Carb and Rejet it
all new bearings and grease them up real good
85 250r Front fender
85 250r headlight
Maier super scoops (tank shrouds)
Progressive springs up front, or possibly to the 350x suspension swap
Change oil
New clutch and ride it for 20+ more years
NYC200x
09-15-2007, 12:40 PM
What is the difference between the 200x front fender and the 250r fender? Same question about the headlight...whats the difference?
Also, where can I get the super scoops/tank shrouds?
I already changed my oil and plug. The guy I bought it from just installed a new clutch, so no worries there.

MAIER had super scoops, not sure if they still do... But they do have the stock replica they make for sure.
250R fender has more style lines and is SLEEEEKER!! Bolt on item.

headlight and front fender looks a lot better and bolts right on. I have a headlight on mine and it used the stock plug in i just unpluged pluged in and straoed the rubber straps. fenders bolt right up to and look 1000x better. im getting 350x shrouds for mine and drilling new holes and fiberglassing over the old ones and sanding them and painting them to make them look stock and good

09-15-2007, 12:56 PM
Ok, sounds good. Whats a cheap online dealer to get these parts besides ebay?
I found the scoops on ebay:

As of right now, my headlight isn't working. I bought a new switch on ebay and will get it soon and hopefully that will fix things.
Does anyone have some pics of a 200x with 250r parts so I can see how different they look?

Again... Don't jump at the first place you see. BDAWGS plastic is free shipping if you spend 100$. Somebody has the link.... but a fender and shrouds are about 75% of 100$....
I think the stock 200X headlight looks cheap.....
The 250R headlight looks great on a 200X, just look at a picture of a 250R on EBAY and it gives you an idea. Does it work well with the lighting coil of a 200X?? I'm not sure about that. My favorite headlight is the 350X dual setup and it's all I run on everything I own. I even cut the stock ones out of my Toyota 4X4 and run the 350X headlight
Oh yeah, I think the R light above is an 86 model, there is also an 86 model which is similar but different.....

Dude you Better Post Pictures Before you get Banned !!!
there are really no bolt on nerf bars, you have to modifie a set for a quad to fit, and honestly unless your racing I see no benifiet unless you like snaging stumps in the netting and spinning around into a tree and possibly dieing, but hey! go for it if you want to!! blaster nerfs are the easiest to make fit on trikes in my op, but here is a pic of my flat tracker with 400ex nerfs
