Just wondering whats the best as far as reliability, handling, cost, cost of replacement parts, after market parts avalible, and so on. Im pretty new to the ATC world and am a speed junkie by heart. Thinking of trying it on 3 wheels. My 2 Big Reds (which I do need some parts for) just dont cut it speed wise. I am a rider and by no means a rookie, LOL, no pro either. I am just new to ATCs .
Thanks,
Luke

the 85-86 give the most bang for the buck, they are the cheapest and easiest to modifie as well, I like any 2 stroke 250 trike, but the 250r is by far the easiest to fix up, also the earlier air cooled R's 81-82 and the better 83-84 are relativly easy and cheap to modifie as well and alittle cheaper to buy as a running machine

I am a Tecate fan... but without a doubt the '85-'86 Honda 250R is exactly what you are looking for... in every way...

Tri-Z's are a good one, but yeah, the 250r's seem to be the easiest and cheapest to modify

I'd say it depends on your riding area.

For all out speed I'd agree with the above posters, 250r all the way.

If you ride a lot of trails, I'd lean towards the 350x and it's easy powerband and low end grunt.

It is easier to find parts for the R's.

Seems to me the costs are similar at this point.

As I get older my fondness for the rocket-booster-induced-neck-snap of the 250r wanes. :Bounce

I like the predictable pull of the 4 strokes.:beer

Reminds me of my trucks.

Yeah, I'll go with the 85/86 R's. There's TONS of them around, lots of companies still make pipes/other stuff for 'em, and they're HONDA, which basically = reliable.

I am a 4 stroke fan more so then a 2 stroke. Is the 350 a pre 400EX? Can an EX motor and what not fit in with ease. I know honda is known to reuse motors alot. What is the handling like with the 350 and the 250R? Just because I run 4 strokes most often doesnt mean Im not anti 2 stroke. How reliable is the 350 as apposed to the 250R? Thanks guys, I knew this topics would be filled with info for me. And there are no egos involed.

85-86 250r with a cr 500 should cure your need for speed!

Is the 500 motor a bolt in conversion? Or is it difficult.

The Liquid 250R hands down can be made into the sweetest all around machine.

The 500 conversion isn't a simple bolt in, there is some frame mods needed but more can be found on the forum here if you search.

Yes Teeks you are correct, A Tri-Z is not an ATC, BUT all trikes are commonly referred to as such.

Just because Honda has ATC in the model doesnt mean they hold the market for all terrain cycles. So hondas sport line up for quads has to be refered to as sport trax and not a sport machine or quad. Close enough, Seems everyone knows what everyones talking about here so it doesnt matter. I just want to know what is the best 3 wheeled machine of death to purchase for a project with my wife.

The '85 and '86 250R's are the best for most people, but I have a soft spot for the air cooled Rs, especially the '83 - '84.

Why the soft spot for the older air cooled ones?

Well its for us. but Im probally going to be the one killed. I want a 20+ year old stomper so it will be built to win against the newer generations of quads. She likes to help me in the garage and she does plan to run one of my Big Reds. She also has a KFX700. This is one of the top 10 reassons I married her. Shes great.

I agree with the ESLAP

So from what everyones says the liquid 250R is the way to go. I thought I would have more positive opinions on the 350X. Is the 350X kick only? Thanks everyone for the opinions

Here my take.

I rode a tri-z as my daily rider for the last 4 years. If you really want to be noticed on the trails by the quad folk - get a tri-z. Everyone gathers around the tri-z in the parking lot. They can be made to be as fast as anything else. They are roomier for larger people with long legs. This issue with the z is that they spit bolts like crazy. They like to be maintained for each ride and double check pipe bolts and engine mounts and such after every ride.

I graduated to an 85 atc 250r this year. I love the six speed and has nice power but tend to shift alot more finding the right gears. Its smaller and a little easier to manhandle on the trails. I have yet to spit out a bolt on the trail and much better at maintenance. Doesnt get as many looks though.

350x is a true trail bike - a little slow but just keeps on chugging and great for snow.

86 Tecate is just the coolest bike ever and rare- i have no ride experience on mine, its a show queen. Not the best for daily rider cause parts avail.

85-86 250r for sure. Someone said the TRi Z likes to be maintained alot, I cant agree with that more!

Went from two 86 Tri Z the good year, to two hondas and I can tell you from experience. I beat the living piss outa them R's and I havent done NOTHING to em!

Tri Zs, I had alota bad luck with them. Clutches, water impellers, seals all that jazz

with a lack of maintenance that Honda will turn into a lump of crap also..I had many Honda's and they have problems too..

one thing I will say is that the R guys are very lucky that the TRX had the same motor, most all aftermarket motor parts were made for the TRX and were nowhere to be found before the TRX. if it wasn't for the TRX you guys would be in the same boat..honda was the all time highest selling manufacture of ATC's thats why there so many parts.

I think I just had bad luck with them Raffa, mine seems to be more of an extreme case I think. Not near as much as others. And I think ive just had good luck with the R's. I still like the yami dont get me wrong, cant find a better trail 250 out there!

I've been a fan of the tecates too, I rode the yami's but I just never liked em to much.

Yea we did luck out with the trx being such a HUGE hit and the aftermarket exploding as it has over the years
