What can i do about rust on a grab bar?

I have a grab bar off a 1984 ATC 200X and it has rust on the back of it from pulling wheelies and scraping it on the street. it is ugly and i am the type of person that does not like to see rust. what can i do about it to get the rust off or at least make it look better? can i sand the rust off and paint it to make it look better? ideas? thoughts? thanks.

Have you tried an SOS pad? You should try it in an inconspicuous area first because if the chrome really thin, it might scratch.

sand paper, low grit then a high grit( to the entire grab bar) then a rustoleum primer, 2 coats(helps with stopping/ keeping rust a bay) then a paint of your choice (automotive sure is pretty but can also be pretty pricey) JUST MAKE SURE THE THING IS SPOTLESS CLEAN BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO PAINT OR THE PAINT WILL NOT STICK!!!
