This is my new project.... I've had it for almost a month now. It is an 85 250R that I bought off ebay for $1600,,,, OUCH! (hard to find one of these around here).

It looked good from the pics and the guy spoke very highly of it... I had to drive 3 1/2 hours south to pick it up... It was "rebuilt" by a previous owner (not the guy I got it from) about a year prior. At first look it seemed to be a decent find, had a few clear problems but nothing I wasn't willing to tackle...

SO I loaded it up and headed home,,,,, That's where the story begins..............................

These are the photos from ebay..

When I got it home, I took it for a ride down the street and I new something was wrong..
The thing wouldn't track straight, and when you turned, it wanted to roll over... So it went into the garage and I started pulling the front end apart.

I didn't think about taking pictures until it was already apart. The problem,,, both upper fork tubes bent,, triple tree toooooooooo tight.

A few pics of the rest of the bike...

New Douglas 11" wheel from Southwest Powersports $99.49 to the door...

Got some of it put together.. I was going to use the stainless bolts I bought off ebay, but after doing some research on thier lack of strength, I opted to clean up the old bolts and reuse them where they are under heavy load...

seemed to nice, why did you pull itall apart?

When I started digging into it I found a ton of little problems and a few major ones...

Aside from the forks being bent, the lowers were smashed where they had been beaten into the trees with a hammer... The forks are junk. ( inside parts may be ok though).

The hubs and axle splines were so bad that the wheels would not tighten.

The axle locknut would not tighten all the way down so the axle wobbled in the carrier.

The swingarm nut was frozen but would not tighten enough to keep the swingarm from moving...

Plus a ton of other things.

All in all the trike was just put together poorly.. And beleive me,,, with the combination of problems this thing had, it was one very scarry thing to ride....

It seemed to be a good start for a really nice project.. I rode one of these when they first came out in 85 and I always wanted one.. I had an 84 200X that was pretty decked out, but that R was wicked!!

Thats going to be one good lookin bike when you are through with it. Someday I'll get mine powdercoated. Was going to get a lot of it "superchromed". It is a powdercoat, but comes out with an ultra mirror finish, but the company I took it to kept giving me loads of crap everytime I went in to check on my parts until I finally pulled them after 3 weeks of broken promises to make it on a dunes trip. For now I just put a really good coat of primer and some spray paint to keep them from rusting until I decide to tear it down again and find someone else that can powdercoat it all for me. Spraypaint might not be as durable, but you can make a spay paint job look pretty good if you know what you are doing.
Looks good.
Looking foward to more :pics: :pics: when you get them.

Yeah, I thought only the 86's used the countersunk sprocket bolts.

Exactly! That's what I meant by when I said it's an 86 Kasey

There must have been a mid-year change or something... My 85 had a bent sprocket hub, so I bought an entire 85 swingarm/axle assembly, and it had a sprocket hub that uses countersunk bolts, unlike my original.

You can tell it's an 85 swingarm by the brake stay mount.

Of course, after 22 years, who knows what parts may end up on something.

I just ordered my axle, hubs and new locknut today. My funds have been diverted to "golf cart" racing..... Just finished the quad last month, so I'm gonna get back on the trike now...
I'll post some pics when I have something worth showing..
