hey stony here in livingston county we call the sheriff's to come and run the vin and bring a Vehicle Identification Number Verification Slip,,, take that and a bill of sale to the DMV and you got plates..Good luck! I have mine done to run on the ICE,,, the DEC likes it when your legal,,;) :TrikesOwn

but raffa i have a we bit of a problem here. i got my frame from dale and he forgot to send me a bill of sale. i dont think dale would steal frames and stuff so the running a vin number dont bother me. i just need a bill of sale.

get your vin number run by your local law enforcement, and check the nysdmv website about needing a title. i dont think you need one if the atv is over 15 years old, or maybe its 20. i think you just need to bring the vin number in and they can can register it for you. but also check into insurance on the atv as well, cuz im not sure if you can register it with out it being insured first...not sure on that, but i know thats how it works with cars, and new york being as anal as they are i wouldnt put it past them.

Just go to dmv and ask. They are very helpful. You need insurance but don't need to provide proof of it when registering. trikes are not a problem at all. $60 for a 350x per year. Bob

I was told by a DEC? officer  that all ATVs need to be registered, they need to be insured if they are used anywhere other then your own personal property.

I have had to go through a similar process with mopeds before; I have heard that unless it is stolen the records get cleared out after 5 years of inactivity. I had a moped that was originally registered in the wrong class (A) so when my friend tried to register it 4 years after it had last been registered they would only let him register it in that class (A), I was able to register it after 5 years as the class B moped that it was without a problem.

you can register any 3 wheeler in any state. they werent banned completely they just cant be imported new since 86'. so if you had an 87' or 88 model of some type you might have a special registration process. also stolen rocords never get erased. and to run a vin voluntarily at the police station you have to be able to prove its yours, they will run it at the dmv if they are in a good mood, lol.... in new york if you ride the wheeler on private property ONLY and you have permission to be on it you dont need insurance, but it ALWAYS needs to be registered if it is being used. and if ridden anywhere other than private property you need insurance.

Both of my trikes are registered and insured in NYS. Not that being legal gets you any place to ride though...

My 2 -250 sx's are registered in NYS but have no insurance. I went down to DMV with a bill of sale & a vin tracing, filled out all the papers no problems. It costs 10.00 per trike each year for the reg's. All I have now is a transferable registration's for both, so if I sold either trike I just sign the back and surender the plate to DMV.

I was able to do the vin tracing as well. I was told to have the police verify it, or make a tracing, or take a clear picture of the vin.
