View Full Version : Got another 1986 350x
Dammit!

Picked this up today for a grand (actually a good price around here these days). It's dirty but in pretty solid shape. Starts on the first kick. No smoke coming from the exhaust at all. Good power. Needs a new chain, front master cylinder, rear bearings and there's a pretty wicked side to side wobble in the front end when riding on pavement. Not sure what the cause is yet.
This thing is the reason for the "thinking about parting a 350x" thread I posted yesterday. I figured if I picked this up, my $500 ebay special is gonna get parted out. I have no use for two projects. I'll combine the best parts to make one as nice as I can then everything else is going on ebay. It won't happen for at least a few days (threw my back out so no working in the garage for a little while) and I need to figure out exactly what is causing that wobble. I should make out pretty good on it though. It would have cost me at least another few hundred to get my other one rideable. By the time I sell all the extra parts I'm going to have I'll probably have gotten this one for free.
He threw in some tires and wheels with it too but the tires are junk. A pair of cheng shin ice racer style knobbies, some haulers and what I think is a 200x front wheel. All the tires are severely rotted though. I already threw the cheng shins out. I'll keep the rims on the others but I think the rims with the haulers are for a Banshee.

Actually Dammit that is an excellent Idea. I did the same thing with a pair of 200x's I had. I parted and sold off everything I didnt need to make one nice one and in the process actually made money off the whole thing.
( uh not sure why the smiley came in sorry but thats not my intention just trying to say the name)

More pics after washing it a bit and giving it the usual gratuitous WD40 bath. Funny how these neglected trikes seem to soak that stuff up.
I'm pretty happy with the situation I'm in with these two machines. Between them I will end up with a pretty nice runner. The new one has some minor issues but I have the parts to take care of just about everything. Pretty sure now that the front end wobble is just the front tire too. With the grand I paid for this one, and having only about $550 into the other one, after I sell all the unused parts I might have what works out to be a free 350x. :w00t:

More pics! Notice in the last post, you can still see the yellow paint on the front disk bolts. There's some on the front hub bolts also. Anybody know what "G72" means?
Here's a pic of the donor 350x that has the brand new plastics and fresh sykolincoln gas tank. All that stuff is going on the new one.
Couple pics of the Tri-Z just for the hell of it. :naughty:

Trying to slim down actually. The Tri-Z is unfortunately for sale. The 1985 250R will be for sale as soon as I get off my butt and swap the stator out. One of the 350's will be gone. So that leaves one 350x, one 250R, one 200x and two 70's by the time I sell everything.
I guess it all boils down to rather having a smaller number of strong runners than a large number of projects that I can't even ride.

Nice grab on the 350x. Im looking to build a 350x for some play/trail riding. Not to jump the thread but I got this 86 350x from craigslist for 400. It looks like a real roach but suprisingly it has extremely low hours, some drug addict got a hold of a yellow paint and a paint brush and went to town:( But it has alot of the oem goodies of tool kit, grab bar, helmet holder. I plan on taking it down to the frame for some powder coat and new plastics. I figure when I'm done I will have about $1k in it. On that 350x is that a oem, ims, or clarke tank? I am debating between the ims and clarke on which one looks/fits the best.

It's a beat up and faded oem steel tank actually. I thought it was plastic when I first saw it in the pics the guy sent me.
Get that X going so we can take them out in the desert this winter and beat the crap out of them. :D

Are the hauler's worth anything? I just would like the tires themselves if you decide to trash em :)

Yeah deffinatly a nice snag on your part. The yellow on the stud's is from the factory ,they all rolled off the assembly line with yellow on the nut's and stud's.As far as the top of the head and the G72,that's an inspection number or something also from the factory,I have alot of rocker's with wierd number's on the with the white paint marker numbers on them.Between both machine's it looks like you have a surplus of part's.And there both '86's also..So that mean's you probably have a couple of good frame's too build also..Keep the pic's rolling and I hope your back get's better, look's like you got alot of work too do.

It was a complete bike more or less. Just needs engine work and lots of little things. I have no idea what I'll have leftover. I'll post in the classifieds when I'm ready. I might just throw everything on ebay starting at 99 cents each item with no reserve and see what happens.

The 70 isn't under wraps at all. I posted pics of it a while back. It's just waiting for it's gas tank and fenders (and for me to figure out wtf I want to do about a motor for it.
The lights are on the shelf where they will remain until I score another 86 R that I want to keep. :p
