I found an 86 250R close to where we are at the moment, its got an FMF pipe, Ohlins rear shock, Keihin carb, a set of dirt tires and a set of sand skates on Douglas rims, and he wants 1100$ for it. I havent seen it and I havent even talked to the guy about it to see whats wrong, but does it sound like a good deal?? Need to know quick!!! so we can decide which direction were gonna go. Thanks guys!!!

OK!!! Update!!!! I called him up last night and talked to him for a while. Apparantly it used to be a dirt track racer, raced by his buddy, and he bought it and got out of riding so its been sittin for about 2 years. Sounds like its in pretty good condition, no chain damage, etc. He said it used a mix of 93/AVgas, which means that its probably got some motor work done to it. He said that they tried using straight 93 octane and fried a hole in the piston, so they had it bored and it has a new piston. Said it runs great. Going to look at it later tonight, around 5:00 or later. I cant wait!!!!!!!! :w00t: :w00t:

Ill get all the pics within the next hour, and Ill let everyone guess what I paid for it once youve seen everything thats on it.

Ok guys, heres the last of them for now.

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k28/Nick_R_23/IMG_1896.jpg
Can anyone recognize what this is? I know what it is!! :naughty:

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k28/Nick_R_23/IMG_1897.jpg
Heres the other end of it....I think most people can figure out what it is now. :w00t:

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k28/Nick_R_23/IMG_1900.jpg
But I dont recognize this....its mounted in front of the gas tank behind the upper triple....its made by Answer Racing and its called a Roost Boost....some kinda ignition thing?? :wondering

Along with all that, its been bored and has a new piston, and the guy seems to think its been ported and polished too. I think theres a little more done to it, because it runs on a 50-50 mix of 93 octane and race gas...

Anyone wanna guess what I paid for it?? It even has a title!!! :w00t:

why is there duct tape on tank????????

According to him, it was for better grip with your knees while riding. I think Ill leave it on for now because I bet trying to get all that residue off is gonna be a PITA.

When you say what you paid, i'll probably puke!! But it's nice to see that great deals still do exist. Their just getting tougher to come across. But it's really a nice original R with old school parts and a few somewhat newer pieces that it received during it's lifetime. Prime restoration candidate. Looks like a black engine? 86 style seat. The tank appears to still have great color as well. Enjoy !!

Yeah, the bikes an 86, and the engines black..which is an 85 motor, right??

Thanks for all the compliments, guys! Its really exciting to actually own an 86R!!! I cant get away from the window staring at it, I really cant believe its sitting in the back of our truck!!! I love it already!!!!!!!! :beer

looks good! I heard the roost boost (honestly) doesnt really make much of a difference, i believe its just a device that goes between the coil and sparkplug and supposedly enhances spark.

I didnt even notice it until you mentioned it!!! Im sure its still got some other things on it that I havent found yet, I suspect that the reed cage isnt stock.

Im not sure about rebuilding the shock, it seems to be fine as it is. I can get a pic of the rezzy when I go get some more pics of the machine.

Thanks for all the comments guys, and yeah that is one baaaad truck!!! I love it!!!

Well I finally went to go start it up, and found out it has no spark. We did some testing and its either the CDI box or the coil. So its gonna be sitting until I can find whichever one is bad and replace it. :(

yea first think next to fixing the spark take that dumb roost crap off haha if you don't make enough power that doesn't help any lol

Heck it may be that messing the spark issue!

Nick_R_23
08-12-2007, 01:58 AM
Well we tried it without the roost boost and its not the problem, but its coming off anyway. Does anyone have a junk wiring harness that I could snag a plug from? They cut the wiring harness and I dont have the connector. Ill post a pic of the part I need.

-Nick :TrikesOwn

Nick_R_23
08-15-2007, 04:18 AM
Well the camera disappeared, so Ill take pics when I find it. I know its around here somewhere I guess I just gotta look harder.

I went to go start testing things, and I remembered that the ohmeter is at the shop, so Ill have to go get that tomorrow. I found out that the Roost Boost has the connector I need for the wiring harness, so Im just gonna cut it off and use that connector, since its probably junk anyway.

I kinda got bored and tested the 2 terminals on the coil for continuity.....and it has continuity between the terminals.....I dont think its supposed to??? Would this mean its bad??

On a brighter note...that WD40 took the duct tape off like it was nothing...the tank looks a lot better now!!!

Last things....is there a skidplate available for the swinger that works with the lowering strut?? Id really like to have one on there. And does anyone have a rubber coil mount they'd like to get rid of free or very cheap?? Also are these supposed to have a coolant overflow bottle...I think mines missing.

Got the digital mulitmeter this morning, and went thru testing everything, and it turns out the CDI is bad. Is there any other machines that have a CDI that will fit? Or is there a good aftermarket one?? I guess thats the next big thing that I need now.

Hmm so the rezzy is Ohlins and not the whole shock absorber? Are you supposed to have that cap on the end of the rezzy?

If soo....

....crap

Nick_R_23
08-19-2007, 05:54 AM
I think the whole shock is Ohlins, at least thats what I was told. Can anyone tell if it is or not?? Its got an Ohlins sticker on the fender and he said they paid 650$ new, so Im assuming the whole thing is Ohlins.

I think that end cap is just like a tire stem cap, probably not life threatening if yours is missing.

SHE RUNS!!!!!! YAMAHONDAMAN :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:

Finally went in to town to buy the CDI box for this thing...got it all loaded up in the truck to make sure it worked and I wasnt gonna waste 50$ on a bad box...so naturally we stick it on and kick it over and what do you know it sparks! But thats not all, the guy we were buyin it from says to stick the old one in and see if it works too (he didnt believe me that it was bad)... and it sparks off the old CDI also!!! Stuck some gas down the cylinder and it fired 2nd kick!!! Sounds awesome, but I dont understand why the CDI wouldnt work for 2 weeks and all of a sudden work?? Murphys law at its finest I guess... But its all good, because I didnt have to buy the new CDI and I got 50$ to sink into something else. :D

On another topic, would it be ok to run straight AVgas in this thing (with oil of course), because its supposed to have a 93/race gas mix, which the average of that would be 101.5 octane and AVgas is 100...would 1.5 octane make that much of a difference...or would different plug make up for that?

-Nick :TrikesOwn

oldsking86
08-29-2007, 12:15 AM
thats fun to use but expensive, 93 works fine

Nick_R_23
08-29-2007, 03:02 AM
The original owner thought that straight 93 would be fine, ended up with a nice hole in the piston, and only after a day at camp at the dunes. Im thinking I want to run just AVgas, but how would this affect the motor and its performance?

-Nick :TrikesOwn

Dude,
Nice snag on the 250R. Beautiful machine. Just be careful on that beast. You got a great deal. Enjoy it !!!

Dammit!
08-29-2007, 10:24 AM
Low octane wouldn't burn a hole in the piston. It would cause detonation. The damage looks different from a clean hole. If it burned a clean hole right through it was way too lean. If he thought it was the gas it probably isn't fixed yet so that should be your first order of business. Get that thing jetted right.

I run 100LL AV gas in my R and I love it. I ran 91/110 for a little while but it was still pinging. No pinging at all with the AV gas and it's cheaper too.

Nick_R_23
08-29-2007, 11:21 AM
Jettings all perfect, he has it all setup to run like it is now, its just that they went out and he thought he could only run 93 and not have to mix it with the race gas, and ended up doing something to the piston (hole in it is what I was told). Its been since bored out and has a new piston. Ill be checking the plug though until Im comfortable about all the settings to make sure it doesnt happen again.
