1985 350X engine help

My buddy (jcraig) has an 85 350x and the kick start wont move. He took off the cylinder head cover and the kick start will move like its supposed to. Anyone have any idea what the problem is when the cover is on? Valves? Timing? We don't know.

I forgot to mention that this does have a GOKI starter on it, if that matters.

check the valve clearance not enough too much compressio and too much clearance and not enough compression sorry about hte spelling

I don't exactly agree with the above answer, A valve adjuster that came loose and was holding a valve open could cause the piston to contact the valve. You cannot cause "too much compression" Compression is compression despite what all is going on in the valve train. You could have a loss of compression if a valve hung up for numerous reasons but not too much compression.

It may have jumped time from any of the sprocket mounting points or a bad tensioner. Before I tore it down, I would have pulled the plug and rotated the engine to "T" and popped off the valve cover to see if it were in time.

Thanks for the help. It ended up being out of time by like 9 teeth on the cam sprocket. Now i have to wait for a coil to come in, to see if i can get some spark from the plug.

Problem now is that most likely there is a slightly bent valve. Lay the head valve side up and pour some gas in there, if it leaks through the valves then they need to be replaced.
