Hey guys I was wondering if any of you out there knew what the subframe width was on a 250r (85-86) or 200x (83-85). My 86 is straight, but someone rigged a homemade grabbar on the back and broke off one of the welded threaded inserts that secures the grab bar. Ill have to take pics, if you guys dont know what Im talking about. They also redrilled a hole through the subframe for another bolt to secure the grab bar, and the ends of the square tube on the subframe are kinda rough.
My plan is to weld 250r or earlier 200x top subframe posts in place of what I have now, which would also allow me a much better selection of aftermarket grab bars. It would be a great benefit for not much hassle. If everything would measure up, all I would have to do is cut off the last 4-5 inches or so of subframe (where the grab bar mounts) and weld in a section from a donor.

I asked for the width in the top of my post from an x or r just so I know whether or not I could use aftermarket grab bars from the x's or r's. If somehow the overall subframe width differs, I can always use square tube and create my own setup.

If you have a welder, you can make just about anything work. Also those "welded threaded inserts" are known as "blind nuts".

Never heard of "blind nuts", do you have any idea where I could get them? They wouldnt be too hard to weld on square tube, I just wasnt sure about the availability. I guess that was my biggest reason for using atc frame instead of square tube. Does anyone know the rear tube size that I would use in place of stock?

Make your own... Get a piece of 5/8 cold rolled steel round stock and drill a hole in the center, preferably on a lathe with the correct size for an 8mm - 1.25 pitch tap. Weld it on, tap it out and paint it. I just did it for the 450R exhaust. You can also simply weld a nut on there.

I make all kinds of parts on a lathe and it's always better than stock....

Ive spent a lotttttt of time in front of a lathe, but now that Im older, I dont have the resources I used to have when I was in school. That is a sweet idea though dirtcrasher, and BTW- you were riight on about the impact on that clutch basket. The thing finally came off, should have used it in the first place.
