Hi,
What is the top speed for an 1981 ATC 185. Torque and HP stats would be nice too. Thanks.

Everyone will tell you they go about 45 or so, but all the faster I've ever been able to get mine to go is just under 30mph. Thats all stock. Stock tires, sprockets, gearing, etc...

If you're on a nice flat gravel road, you might get 45 out of it. Real world is closer to 40, and you'll be rattled to death if you're going that fast on a rough trail. It's kinda hard to give you "horsepower" and "torque" stats because I doubt anyone has put a 185 on a chassis dyno in about 20 years LOL.

I was out with some of the guys out on our street... and one had his radar gun from baseball, we clocked some of our bikes trikes and quads...
My 83 185s goes right at 54. (don't know how much difference there is in the 2 years though)
My 200x is about the same top speed but it gets there a whole lot quicker.
My friends yamaha warrior 350 64
And a 2004 klx 110 at 52, 54-55 after a exhaust upgrade.

My friends '82 185 topped out at 57, all stock. You could probably put a pipe and gearing change and get 60 out of it.
My '83 200 will top out at 58 but it takes a while longer to get there.

I rode a 185 auto X that was geared a little on the high side, and that thing would pull at least 50 no problem.

the atc 90 was rated at 6 hp so it would have to be closer to 10 to 12

Over 50 mph on a 110 dirtbike? I had a little 110 before and it would barely break 35 mph anywhere. I dont think a 185 could go faster than a 200x, this kid has one and it is a slow little thing. I dont know about topped out but on trails I can blow past it easily. Even in open fields, it just dosent rev high enough to get up to speed.

My friend has a TTR-90 dirt bike that's bone stock other than an SDG exhaust I put on it, and it easily keeps up with my Big Bear up to about 45-48 mph. Stock gearing, stock tires, etc.

back in the 80s i had a 85 200x and a buddy had a 83 185s and he would kill me on top end if i stayed with him till i maxed out.
his 185 was bone stock and only a few years old
my x was built with stock gears and 22 inch tires
so they do have more top end then a 200x but the x is so much quicker

I never really saw a 185 topped out but I guess I can believe it. Only time I ever saw one going pretty good was when my clutch was slipping in the winter. It was decently fast but I never had a chance to go wide open again since it blew up. I guess the engines are geared alot different then, but the 200x is geared more for performance. Overall the 200x gearing is much better for fast riding in trails and such.
At one time I had a 15 tooth sprocket with 22s and it was pretty fast on top end, I would say around 65. It wouldnt even pull 6th gear in a half of a mile but I would guess i was going anywhere from 55-60.
Edit: The ttr 90 could keep up to a big bear? I know big bears are geared very low but I didnt think a ttr could keep up. Another friend used to have a ttr90 that I was just recently screwing around on. He probably weighs around 120, I weigh 180-185. I really didnt think it was that fast though? I wound it out on a old cemetery road and my guess would be around 35 mph. I used to have a arctic cat 400 that AMAZINGLY topped out at 30 mph and it seemed just about as fast. My neighbors kid has one and it does seem pretty fast for a little 90, but hes only 7. I think weight has alot to do with it also.

Yes, the warrior is stock. we got it to 68 once, but that was off a really big hill.
My 200x keeps up on the top end with the 185s, I would start pulling on him, but my tires are worn down about a inch smaller (I have absolutely no knobs touching the ground 4 years of drifting on the same duro 2 plies :S)
The little 110 is pretty fast on the top end, but it's a 3spd auto clutch, not real good off the line.
As for take off, my friend was on my 185s and I was on my 200x, he weighs about 140, I'm 150 and I had my little brother on the back (another 90 or so) and all the way through the gears our front tires were no more then a foot appart (he'd drop back about 2 inches when he shifted. Because the auto clutch slips more?)
