Hi,
I have a Big Red 1985 (250) with a odd problem. Everything is fine with it but sometime it stop and don't want to restart. We heard the starter trying to do its job but the Big Red don't want to start. 5 seconds later or 4 hours (as the Big Red wish) it start and everything go back to normal.
I made it check, and as always the problem didn't happen when the mechanized want to do a diagnostic. He made a carburettor clean-up, check all filters, hoses and everything he might think that could cause the problem. He think that could be an electrical problem.
Does someone is aware of this kind of behavior with Big Reds ?
Thanks
Frank

My big red did the same thing and I turned the gas to reserve and then it started. They are metal gas tanks and some times rust breaks free and glogs fuel flow. Make sure it is getting gas.

Is the starter turning the engine over??
It's almost like when my X wife said about her car "it won't catch", I said WTF??
If it's turning over and has compression then it's fuel or spark. Some weaker coils lose resistance (or gain??) when hot and work when cooled off again.
More than likely it's your carb and the fuel tank venting properly. Try draining the fuel bowl the next time this happens - immediately. If there is very little fuel, work your way back and you'll find it. You can also try just removing the gas cap entirely and hitting the start button, if it fires it just means the cap isn't venting which is very common........

Possibly check the coil and stator for resistances when theyre hot (when it wont start) and match them to the resistances when its cold (running fine) If theres a substantial increase or decrease it could be bad.
