Hello all, this is my first post, so I just wanted to introduce myself.

Here's my story.

A few months back, my wife's grandfather had his "going into retirement" auction for his farm. My wife and I felt it would be a good idea to go the auction and support him and his family (about a 4 hour drive away). So when we get there I spot a very abused 1985 Honda ATC250ES and took a quick looksy. Every fender was broken or missing, the electric start didn't work, the side covers are gone, the battery and most of the wiring were smashed or ripped apart, the fuel tank it bent, the front brakes kind of work, and the rear are cableless. The engine oil had the consistancy of roof shingles. The stright pipe exhaust looks like it welded by a blind 3 year old. But the sucker fired on the first kick, the tires were decent, and the tranny shifted very well (though reverse took some getting used to)

As I was checking it out my wife's Grandmother comes over and starts crying (yes I'm serious) about the loss of the 3 wheeler. "We had 9 children who all grew up riding this.... what a shame to see it go....so many memories....what a great machine, etc" I figured I could use the unit around my place for various little projects and decided in my mind I would go as high as $500 for the machine.

well I bid it up to $500 and when the guy I was against went $550 I looked up to now see one of my wifes aunts begging her husband to please buy it (and he basically ignoring her), so I bid $600. I got the machine. In the next 5 minutes nearly every one of my wife's relatives came to and congratulated me as if I'd just won the Daytona 500. These are VERY genuine good ol farm folk and were totally pumped the unit was staying in the family. I'm now offically the number one "married in."

So I get the unit home and take it for a 10 minute spin. Turns out the sucker isn't the instant death trap the media had me believing. Man is that thing fun! I am an ex-stock car driver, hard core snowmobiler, boat-owning, 4 wheeler enthusiast, and I can say with all confidence that there is nothing I've been on with an engine more fun than that machine. The sucker is even hard to get stuck (I get off quite often but not to the point where I need a winch. I often go riding on the weekends with a group of about 15 of us in some pretty mixed boggy, swampy, rocky, hilly stuff. By this weekend my beauty will be basically ready for it's first all day run (I've done a LOT of fixing, mostly just labor). The $12,000 800 Outty and his 700Arctic Cat buddies will be in for a surprise.

great story. I think you should do a nice simple restoration on that trike and surprise your family with it at a gathering or such. Show them it will be around another 20 years.

You just spoiled the secret - that trikes are way more fun than quads.:welcome: Let us know when you get the next one.

Thank you all for the welcome!

I snapped some pics for you, but I hope you aren't eating when you see them.
Note the winch that has been stricktly a front end weight so far, my foot guards which I badly needed due the small willows, poplars and ant hills, and my starter button beside my neutral light.
I've got some rear fenders on the way, I've got the fuel tank basically straight, and last night I welded on my new muffler, so it's a work in progress.

Welcome: I must tell you there is no cure for the 3wheeled fever you've come down with. The only way to control the fever is by gettin sideways!!! roostin donuts!!!! long wheel stands!!! and mudding!!! Have fun and don't forget to take a pic the frist time you winch out of the sippy hole!

There is no doubt she has cleaned up a lot over what it looked like at first. The new seat is a big improvement both visually and comfort, and the fuel tank was a real eyesore. Cutting off and or reapiring the wiring and building my side cover (old mudflap) didn't hurt either.

after we put the kids to bed last night I a 50 foot or so wheelie with it right past the kitchen window..... the wife was not amused. But it's like I told her, "I had to try out he muffler somehow."

Ah, but when you are invited, you say you can't because your working on the trike. A plausible excuse, and they'll understand!

So yesterday was the ride with the big boys. Every one left there very impressed. Although I must say that most of the guys were full of compliments when I pulled up with it. They are great group that way, supportive of anything we can ride on, and knowledgable of the true hazards. It's actually kinda funny to see a guy come over who has $15,000 in his bike compliment me on how nice my new ride is. Oh they make fun of each others rides a lot, but it's good natured ribbing.

The ride lasted about 7 hours total with only about a 15 minute break for lunch. I'm going to guess we had 20ish bikes total. We had the machines shut off lots though for all our various stream crossings and mudholes. Total riding time was probably closer to about 5 hours. I'm definately sore today drom keeping up with the nice riding quads, but no-one had more fun than me. I've done this same run on my 06 650 H2 and not been sore or overly wet, but the fun factor went way up on this run.
By the time we got home my clothes and possibly boots are completely runied, and my helmet is going to need some serious cleaning. I probably got stuck a dozen or so times but only needed winching once. It wasn't even in a creek or swamp. My main frame was hung up on a beaver run and the front was lodged againt a fallen tree. Other than that I got off and pushed the rest of the times. A few times it was floating when I did so.

there was a mudhole/swamphole that only 2 of us made it through without the winches. The other guy was a 750 Brute Force jacked up to the sky with Mudzillas and he only made it because he was the first guy through.

When were loading up to go home a guy come over and said "you were sure an entertaining guy to watch out there today. You've inspired me to go home and get my 110 going again." Who knows, maybe I've started a trend.
