I got this 1986 200s 3 wheeler from someone who had it sitting in their garage for 5 years. It would not start so I tore down the carb and totally rebuilt it. New jets and everything. Its starts fine now but will not idle. I have the idle speed screw turned in all the way and it still wont run fast enough to idle properly. The air mixture screw seems to have zero effect no matter where I turn it. I left it at the factory setting of 1 3/4 turn out and tried setting the timing. Still wont idle. The spark is there but Im not sure its as hot as it should be, at least not as hot as newer technology bikes are so I bought a used ignition module on e-bay. Spark still is the same and no difference in the way it runs. It does run good and have plenty of power, just dosent idle. Any help?

It sounds like one of these problem:
Carb
Timing
or possibly the Exciter Coil.

Let's start with a few questions:
Does it start easy or Hard?
Once running does it have any power ?
Does it seem to bog down when you give it gas?
What does the spark plug look like? White, Brownish, Black, Oily Black, ect?

Id go along with the same possibilities, but because the carb was just rebuilt, and the air screw not having any affect, Id lean towards a problem with the pilot jet, being incorrect size, or pilot jet or the orifice it screws into being clogged.

To answer your questions..........
1) It starts good with just 1 or 2 pulls.
2) It has plenty of power once running.
3) Does not bog at all when I give it gas.
4) Plug is ALWAYS black. Bike does not smoke at all when running however.
Thanks for all your help!

the guy probabally got a bigger carb and never rejetted it.
that would account for the black plug. are you keeping the idle screw turned all the way in?
mine starts idling about 1/2-3/4 out

Could the valves need to be adjusted. Since it was sitting for so long. oops

Hey Bikerscum, I had the same problem with my 200s when I rebuilt the carb the new needle valve was about 3/16 to short. It only took me 2 months to figure it out but I swapped the old on back in and it idles fine once it warms up. Never through anything away, drives the wife mad.

The rebuild kit came with the stock jet sizes, which I installed. I will try turning the air mixture screw in more. Right now it is set as the manual states, 1 3/4 out. As far as the needle valve being too short, I have no way of telling. I just useed the parts that came in the kit. The plug being black all the time tells me "to much gas". Maybe I should try smaller than stock jets ???

Try moving the e-clip on the needle valve up a notch. I kept playing with mine (e-clip, pilot screw) until I found the combination that worked. I fell your frustration, just be patient. Don't threaten to burn it or trash it, I know it ate my lunch. Good luck
