My 85 250 R died today and I was wondering if someone could give me the ohm specs. for the coil and stator. I know I should have a manual, but I've only owned it a week. Thanks Josh

Hey smokin,
There is a stator/alternator/pulse generator. The pulse generator is a stator or alternator. There is also a ignition coil, exciter coil, lighting coil, and ac regulator.

ignition coil---primary coil resistance 0.16-0.2 ohms
---secondary coil resistance 3.69-4.51 ohms
(without spark plug cap)

Exciter coil resistance--- 50-250 ohms

pulse generator coil resistance--- 50-200 ohms

lighting coil resistance--- 0.1-1.0 ohms

ac regulator---regulating voltage 13.5-14.5 V
---resistance 100k ohms

Hope this helps.

Sorry my bad, just havent heard anyone call a pulse generator a stator on a 250r, a stator on a 200X maybe but not an R.

Thanks Kimmer,

That is exactly what I wanted, I looked at it a little tonight. It seems to have week spark, if I kick it over really hard it has spark, but if I just kick it slow it doesn't seem to have much if anything. I have checked all the wiring and grounds everything looks good. I was riding it running perfect and it just died. I will get the meter on it tomarrow and check everything. Thanks Josh

250R's are known for there weak spark, mine runs fine but when i test the spark its very weak, its always been that way.

I noticed a guy on ebay a few weeks ago selling aftermarket coils with a heavyduty plug wire on them, but didn't get a chance to look it up again. It looked like a nice system. I'll try to find it again and let you know.

I checked the coil and it didn't pass the primary test. It was just a little over spec. I went and ordered one today. I seen those aftermarket ones and they seemed a little to pricey, at over $50. I checked bikebandit they were around $37, they said suggested retail was $44, so I figerued I would just go get one from the honda shop. It was $53 with tax. If I would've known it was going to be that high I would've ordered one from bikebandit and waited. Bike shops are way overpriced, but if you want it fast its your only choice. Now if they just weren't such tight asses and would stock some parts instead of ordering everything. I learn something every day, somedays its just a little more expensive to learn my lesson.

"Hotter Spark" is done by simply adding more windings to the coil which will step up voltage. Same as the Roost Boost principle. I would first dispute the notion that the 250R is "known for its weak spark". For a few pennies more Honda or anybody else could have adding more windings during the manufacturing process if it was such a great problem. If you have a bad coil, Howdy can probably fix you up. Im still using the coil I bought from him 2 years ago for $20 or $30. For whatever this one goes for (its at $61.00 now) Id be VERY surprised if you can even notice the difference for your extra $40

Well all I can say about the weak spark is that I have 3 250R's and they all run great but they all have weak spark. You can kick the motor over 3 times and if your not in a dark area you will never see the spark and if you are in a dark shop or barn you mite see the spark only once, so I brought this subject up on desertunion before the site shut down (that is a 250R enthusiast only web site) and they told me that the week spark was common on all 85 86 250Rs but that it shouldnt cause any problems.

I bought the new OEM coil for $53, it doesn't make the aftermarket one look to bad now. If my new coil fixes the problem(I have my doubts, it wasn't far out on specs) and last as long as the original than it was a good buy. If that was the original it was almost 20 years old and that is great.

I know this may sound stupid but I noticed you said you have only had your R for just a short while, have you tried a new spark plug the only reason i ask is that is I havent seen anyone ask you that ? Ive been riding mine in the woods and when I putt around like that it will bogg sometimes then die and it will not start untill I change plug. just trying to help. Let me know if you find the problem.
