It was a nice Sunday afternoon out driving the MGB, when I stop at Cycle Parts West to pick up my new JT sprocket. 15.99? Ok. Come home and leave it until now. Well then. I have run into some DEEP doo doo. For whatever reason(ugh), my front sprocket has decided to not come off! I go left(lefty loosey) on the effer and it just wont budge! Any tips trix or flix?
Thanks all,
Nick

Reverse threads perhaps?

Reverse threads perhaps?
The sprocket is on the left side on the 85 and it turns counter clock wise, so if the threads where backwards the nut would come loose all the time, I don't think they are.

They're not reverse thread. You're best bet is to get your hands on an impact wrench. I could imagine the cursing if you broke that bolt off in the countershaft!

how do you stop the sprocket from going forward?
Dammit!

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're trying to do. Is the problem just that the sprocket/shaft turns as you try to loosen the bolt? If that's the case just put the chain on and put the bike in gear of have someone step on the rear brake.

I guess it isn't a one man job.
I'll have some updates after 6 tomorrow then.

While sitting on the bike, depress the rear brake lever with your right foot, and while leaning over the left side, loosen the countershaft-sprocket bolt with a wrench and 2 hands.

Your comment made me do it. I just got her off! Easy as 1 2 3. Took me about 5 seconds literally to get on the bike, press the bake lever, and WAM BAM thank you ma'am. Came off. Bugger was on tight.

thanks all! Pictures of my success as soo as I find my camera! :TrikesOwn

Well actually now this is a new question, where is the chain tensioner?
(I know I know I need a manual!)
I know it is on the swinger...but where?

Ok. You're grounded!! put the 250r back in the shed and don't get on it again until you can look at the bearing carrier and the axle and figure out how to change the distance between the axle and the swinger bolt.
Mind the SLOTS(possibly holes if after market) on the carrier and how the axle is positioned in the carrier. Thats all the hints I'm going to give you.
If you're big enough to ride it, you should have the common sense to see how to wrench on it. Its pretty obvious actually.

my goodness man!!!!!! look at it and think about it. there isn't that many parts back there.
just incase here is tips on how to air up the tires:
load 3 wheeler into your truck, drive to tire store . ask for air in your flat tire.
GET THE MANUAL > HECK IT WAS FREE NOT LONG AGO. download it.

Shame on you guys. He's asking for help. not to get flamed. There's no such thing as a stupid question fire.
I'm not sure how the R is but on a Z (and alot of others) you have to loosen the four bolts that hold the carrier to the swinger. Then there should be two set screws pointing towards the back on the top of the carrier that when turned will pull the carrier back there for tightening the chain.
Retighten everything and you should be good to go. I find it easier to do if the rear tires are off the ground. There should be about an inch or a little less play in the midway point of the chain (between the two sprockets)

Not flaming him Chris, just want him to use a little common sense. If it was something difficult to do I'd be the firts to go into detail on how to do it. But its kinda simple.
Also, tightening the chain on your yamaha is a bit different than the hondas.

Don't feel bad about the bolt, on my T-3 the last owner put new sprockets on it and then must have lost the C-clip for the front sprocket. So instead of going to the hardware store and getting one he jjst welded a lage washer over the end of the output shaft!!! Now I have to go after it with a grinder and try and get it off the flipping shaft. Not gonna be fun, I just hope he didn't wreck the groove in the end of it.
