A freind brought an 86 big red to me because it was smoking badly.
It was worse on startup so I assumed valve seals.
Changed seals and found very little play in the guides.
It still smoked.
I pulled the cylinder and the oil rings were very slack in the bore so I assumed once again I had found the problem. Wrong. still smoked.

What next?

Cylinder was honed and found to be very slightly out of round but still has lots of compression. 170lb.

Appears to be no play in the valve guides but have no way to measure them.

Lost.

You might have some oil in the exhaust and that is what is smoking now.

Other things it could be is:
Out of round cylinder ( did you check it? ),
Valve guides wore ( causing the seals to leak ).

yeah, howdy's right. that happened to me when i re-done my 200x.
i thought "what the heck ???". i decided to put some hours on it + it cleared up within a hour of running and i got alot of crap out of the exaust when i took the clean out plate off as well.

Thanks for the reply guys.
He has run it now for a couple of weeks so there should be no oil left in the exhaust.
I told him I would strip it down again in a couple of weeks time.
I will be looking for cracks around the valve guides and will get the cylinder measured by a machine shop.
Thanks again.
