View Full Version : My 1984 250R project (with PICS!)

Last December I won my 1984 250R on ebay for 400 bucks, since then I have dropped at least that much more into it, but almost everything on the bike has been rebuilt or replaced. When I got it, it was supposed to just need a new top end and a couple other things, but it needed a lot more than that. I figure this project to be a good deed, saving one more trike from the scrapyard  The main purpose of this rebuild is to get a good runner, not a showroom restoration. I don't have the cash to make it perfect anyways...

here's a couple pics from ebay, notice how much mud is on it. I never saw a bike with so much mud packed evrywhere!

This bike had a hard life, the more I dug into it the more I found wrong with it. There was some slop in the swingarm, which I thought was either axle or swinger bearings, but it turned out that somebody had removed the old swingarm bolt with a torch and replaced it with a piece of all-thread. The rear brakes were set up wrong, and were wore clear through the brake pad and 1/4" into the caliper. Somehow the original plastics survived with the exception of a large crack in the rear, and the seat is in great shape.

painted frame

removed a couple dents from the pipe and painted it

I put new axle bearings and plastic swingarm bushings from xsystem in the swingarm. Painted and cleared it. Also greased every moving part in the suspension. Redid the front forks with new seals and oil, and got a front max tire.

I got some 20" holeshot xc tires and 9" wheels along with some EX400 hubs, those together should extend the rear about 4 inches or so.

I got a couple engines, so I took the best parts from the two. I had to have one of the cranks pressed though, I put in a new rod and bearing. Also got a .060 over wiseco piston for it. I replaced every seal in the engine, and most of the bearings.

The rear master cylinder was shot, so I got an ex400 one cheap off ebay, and made it work. I had to modify the mounting bracket and the foot pedal, as well as enlarge the holes in the master cylinder.

Here you can see where the stock resevoir just fits between the airbox and frame.

Something just hit me last night, I think everything on this bike, with the exception of some bolts and hardware, has been bought off of ebay!

Thanks guys! I just fired it up for the first time about 15 minutes ago :w00t: seems to run good, just got to do a couple more heat cycles, get it tuned better, then give her a rip. This has been a 6 month project, I just haven't gotten around to making a thread until now.

Pretty much finished now, with the exception of the headlight being mounted. I just need to get the carb tuned so it runs right.

check out the ghetto grab bar, I ran out of $$$ before I could get a real one.

I love these posts. It reminds me of an episode of Overhaulin' in the fact everything seems to be done so quickly and easily. I wish I could convey the freakin' headache and dismay I've had restoring one of these darn things.

is that DG pipe stock or aftermarket? because mine has the same one

looks great so how does it run?

toocheaptosmoke
05-23-2007, 11:06 PM
ya, there was a lot of headaches with this project

It's an aftermarket DG pipe with a stock silencer.

It runs alright, starts on the first kick, but it's running way rich right now. Any thing above 1/4 throttle and she's coughing and starts fogging for mosquitos. I had to put in a 140 main because that was all I had, and the local cycle shop doesn't keep jets in stock. I think the jet needle and needle jet are also pretty worn, along with the rest of the stock carb. I have a real nice 34mm carb I'm going to put on eventually, but it needs a new top cap because the threads are screwed up. I would have like to just started with the good carb and jet from there, but it looks like I'll be doing the job twice. Oh well, I need the practice anyways.

Nice R project there, love the banned on the tank too!

The only turn off for me as the grab bar and of course I read you ran out of money but can't you get a grab bar really cheap?

Where do you ride at, being in western PA ?

Youu near Majestic at all?

05-24-2007, 11:09 AM
Ya, I'm still keeping an eye out for a grab bar, none of my projects are ever really "done" I just needed something to pick the thing up with.

Right now I don't really have any where to ride, other than some local fields and my yard. My one friend says he's gonna take me to some good strip mines,(I think he said mines...;) ) but other than that I don't know where else I'm gonna ride.

I'm an hour north of Pittsburgh, I guess it would be about 2 hours from the Majestic trails.

I only went once (last saturday), no problems with having no registration.

Mr. Raffa has been there a number of times, he never had a problem either.

I really doubt you will ever run into a problem, it's private land to my knowledge, so that's a + for sure.
