Just looking through the stack of reciepts I got I'd say about 2 grand. Money well spent IMO... Now she'll be around for another 20 years. :w00t:

That maier R fender is about half the price of a Tri Z maier fender. I just had to make the mounting holes a bit bigger and used big washers underneath.
I absolutly hate those bearclaws on there so they won't be on there much longer.. :naughty: The lugs on those things are HUGE!!! I think they'd work much better on a big red or SX type trike IMO.
Thanks for all the kind words. :beer

I brought it home the first week of January.. so it's been a while. It didn't help that I was laid off from work halfway through the project so that kinda stalled things for a bit as well.

No need to start a new thread for this question so I thought I'd just throw it in here.
Are most of you guys running the 25 inch tire on the front? Is there a smaller one avalable and if so what kind. Also what kind of silver aluminum rims are available? Will a 250r rim work?
Sitting on this machine it seems awefully high and Huffa mentioned the other day when he was up about how much ground clearence there was. (not that its a bad thing) but I hadn't really noticed until he mentioned it.
So I'm just kind curious about that size tires you Z guys are running.
I run a Carlisle 489 a/t.It is a 24 inch.
As far as rims go,The only silver ones will be from a 85 1/2 Tri-z.A Honda wheel will go on there,But you have to swap out the whole hub and all.But the Hondas do go down to a 10 inch rim in aftermarket .Try lowering your fork tubes 1 inch.It is free to do, and might suit your needs.I actually like the 24 inch setup and the stock fork height. It works well for rocky and rough trails.
chris200x
05-22-2007, 01:01 PM
I just went out and double checked the tire sizes. The front is 25x8x12 and the rears are 22x12x8 and I bet the bottom of the frame is a good 11 inches off the ground (if not more) Is this the actual stock sizes for the tri z? They just seem big to me for some reason.
I also wanna make sure 100% that anyone know if 400ex rear hubs work on the ends of the triz axle??????? I dont wanna spend the little money I have at the moment to find they do not fit. I'd like to switch over to the 4/110 honda bolt pattern if at all possible.
sblt500r
05-22-2007, 01:20 PM
i ran a 23.5 front max on my 250r and 200x. i think you can also get a 23 front tire with an 11 inch rim.
slothminx
05-22-2007, 01:36 PM
The 86 Z came with a 23 inch front and handled better then the 85, Ive got the 25 inch one on mine and have just lowered the forks in the clamps and it seems to have a nice weight balance front to back, though I would like to get a 23 up there some time to compliment my 18's at the back :naughty:
chris200x
05-22-2007, 02:24 PM
18's on the rear? Can you post a pic of that sloth? I Think I'm gonna be better off with the bigger tires the more I think about it. We got alot of rocky trails over here where I ride.
I just measured the clearance from the ground to the bottom of the frame. 12 1/2"... I didn't ride the trike yet but that gotta feel pretty top heavy or tippy. :wondering
Edit: Hey Sloth, What size front sprocket are you using with those tires on the back?

Don't forget, it's should sag quite a few inches with you sitting on it.
Also, with the gas tank not in the usual place, that helps a great deal with lowering the center of gravity.
It will be very interesting to ride your Z and my R back to back and see which one feels lighter. On the scale, from specs I read, yours is close to 20 lbs heavier but yet for some reason looks lighter. I'm sure your steel swingarm (shame on Yamaha) adds a few ponds right there but at least it is not sprung weight.
Raffa cracked his again, did you know that? That was on Sunday when I was not there. You may very well need to beef yours up, or was it already?
ATC-Eric
05-22-2007, 02:54 PM
They are a bit top heavy. A day in the trails with a Z is exhuasting! You'll know soon enough. Disclaimer: Im not in the shape I used to be......
Ive got 22's in the rear, and a 25 on the front on my Z. Personally, I dont like the hidth. Im about to get a 23 for the front, and a set of 20's for the rear.
I want to be a little lower to the ground. I do a decent amount of trail riding with my Z. I think Ill still get around fine with smaller tires.

I somehow missed your post ealier..
I checked the swingarm pretty thoroughly before I painted it and it's in good shape. I won't be jumping very high with this so I don't think I have to worry much about that.
Where on the swingarm did his break? and why?
Huffa.. there's a member thats making aluminum swingarms for the tri z here on the boards (new product and development forum) which should be alot lighter than stock. One of those are on my want list but I just can't afford it right now. I don't think I'll go with an extended one though...
What does the 300 need to be trail ready? If that majestic place isn't so bad with rocks maybe we should take the trikes up there once I get mine broken in. unless you know a nice mellow place to ride more locally.
Chris,The 400ex hubs will fit.But they need to be somewhat worn out or they wont go on the z axle.My advice is to get a set for a older 300ex or 250x quad. Those usally have been worn out some and slide right on the z axle. You will have to run a honda rear wheel though. But the tri-z wheels might fit the honda hub,Becuase they were both 4x100 bolt patterns.
My swingarm cracks too,but it is in a spot where it does not really affect the strenght.Already welded it once.Cracked in the same area. That is up front near the shock area.
slothminx
05-22-2007, 04:34 PM
The swinger cracking depends on the year of swinger you run, the 86's all crack, the 85's are less likely.
I love my 18's make it handle like nothing else. And if you run 20's ive only got 1" less ground clearence at the rear. and 2" if you run 22's.

Maybe I misunderstood this but I thought the honda 300ex, 400ex, 250x etc hubs were 4/110. the Z 4/100 is an odd bolt pattern and there isn't many choices as far as aftermarket or swapping off other machines is concerned.
What I was planning on doing if I cannot get Z gold rims is finding something with a 4/110 bolt pattern hub so I can swap the nicer aluminum rims and new tires I have on the back of my SX. Those rims on the rear of my z right now don't even match (one is an ITP and the other a douglas) and it just bugs the hell outta me!

:wondering I never heard of such a recommendation , putting a hub with worn splines on a perfectly none worn axle.
The splines can't possibly be mating up perfect and you would recommend that to someone ? Wouldn't worn splines start to wear the none worn splines on the axle?
Maybe they mate up perfect because the very tips of splines wear down and the yamaha splines are not as deep as new ones on Honda hubs, yea ;) , maybe that's why you say that?
Yea Chris, when you get more bucks, get that aluminum one, would look sharp!
chris200x
05-22-2007, 04:59 PM
Huffa.. I know someone on these boards (just cannot remember who or what thread) was running a honda hub on there Z axle. I think it also adds an inch or two on either side as well.
I'm thinking if that if those machines mantioned above will work won't a 200x hub work also?
:wondering I never heard of such a recommendation , putting a hub with worn splines on a perfectly none worn axle.

Chris.Sorry for the mis info.I mis typed that statement. You are correct on the 4 x110 pattern.I said 4x 100 and i was wrong in that wording.Sorry.
You can run the hubs I mention, off the 400ex If they are slightly worn.
Huffa.I dont know what to say to you.I run them,About 6 other people run them in that condition. All I can say is the hubs are softer than the axle. The axle is hardened steel.Do you really think a softer hub will damage a steel axle:confused: .The reason why they get worn is from people not torquing them correctly on the 300ex,250x to begin with. When dealing with a limited budget and 20 year old machines,You have to find alternatives.Unless you(Huffa) have all the money in the world.
My old 250x hubs work perfect on my tri-z,and banshee and warrior etc etc.Do a search.I am not the only one doing it!
Whatever you want to do Chris.

Huffa the splines on a Honda rear hub come to tall of a point and won't slide on the splines even though they are the same spline count. they will work when they are slitely worn from not being tightened properly just like Moshman said.

I think I said the same thing here, just worded a bit different.
" Maybe they mate up perfect because the very tips of splines wear down and the yamaha splines are not as deep as new ones on Honda hubs, yea , maybe that's why you say that? "
So you could file them down also instead of shopping for worn ones?
