No trikes allowed in desert racing events.
Hi Sal. I just have a quick question. Would a person be allowed to compete in SCORE desert racing events in the ATV class on a three wheeler? I'm an avid collector and rider of 80's Honda and Yamaha three wheelers and have always wanted to enter one of the shorter desert racing events (maybe the Baja 250?). It would probably be next year before I could get everything together to do it but I am very seriously interested in doing it at some point.
So is it still "run what you brung" or does that only apply to Volkswagons? Please don't tell me SCORE has caved to the insurance companies like the AMA has...
Thanks for your time either way.
-Doug
Sal's response...
Doug, thanks for your interest in Score. We do not allow 3 wheel ATV's, sorry.

You should call 'em up again and ask if you can drive your Ford Pinto in the Baja 1000....

That's what really ticks me off. I bet they'd allow it.
I just sent him a follow up response asking the reason for it.

Why not. The trails are open for everyone right? Or is it blocked off because of the race?

Hey you guys!
Do you think there's any way we could Tri-Z to disguise our three wheelers to be eligleble for the race? Maybe if we made them look more like quads only we'd put a dummy wheel on it! Ha Ha! No seriously, that is totally lame that the "run what you brung" means everything but three wheelers. Maybe if we agreed to sign a waver that stated that "Three wheelers are very dangerous and I could seriously injure myself if I don't zig before I zagg." What's wrong with people:drool:

My boss goes down there and runs the 250 on his dirtbike. He dosnet enter the race but he runs the whole corse during the race. In one of the harder sections he passed a guy on a 85 250r. He talked to him for a while, the guy dosent race just like to run the corse, and is a local.
Just friggn show up and do it. I think a lot of these people reply to Questions Via phone or email that way.But showing up and arguing with em might get it done.

Well, you tried the polite courteous approach and was met with a stonewalling without good reason.
I say start right behind them when they pull out and beat as many of them as you can. I'm sick of this ignorant non-sense that causes us to be left out when it was our machines that started the ATV craze.
If they won't give you respect, take it.

Read some fine print. Find out exactly where it says no trikes.
You can still run the course if you dont win the war, but it sucks you wouldnt be eligible to win anything.

Yeah I agree with what everyone else says, just go out, make a lot of the official racers look like a bunch of douchebags...

Here's the rest of my correspondence with Sal.
Thanks for the respons, Sal. Could I ask why this is though? Is it insurance reasons or what? These machines really excel in a desert environment and I honestly believe that, with a few modern improvements, they could be very competitive despite their age. I think the press would get a kick out if also.
-Doug
Doug, sorry we have stated this in Score's rule book for quite a number of years. Yes, I do believe it stems from insurance problems.
Sal
Sorry about that but I've had problems with the SCORE web site for a while now. Even as I type it's not loading for me so I can't access the rulebook.
Since the non-allowance of three wheelers stems from insurance issues, is there any way around it? Such as procuring my own insurance policy? Anything at all?
-Doug
Doug, would love to have you race with us but not on a 3/W. We don't get into self insured etc...
Sal
Alright then, I give up. I do thank you for your time but I can't begin to tell you how disappointing it is that organizations such as SCORE have caved to the insurance companies. SCORE used to be the true embodiment of racing. "Run what ya brung" and be allowed to race against the top competitors in the field with whatever you choose to compete with. Further, I'd bet money that the statistics would show injuries on three wheelers were no greater or more frequent than subsequent years on quads. I have no interest in competing on a quad. Doing it on a trike was part of the excitement for me.
Maybe you'll see me out there running the course sometime in the future. Even if I have to do it on an unofficial level.

I wanted to race it one day as well.... unfortunately i didnt see it in the near future because of financial situation, but it was a dream, that i would make happen eventually... which unfortunately is no longer, i now have to come to terms that it just isnt even realistic, because of some panty waist who destroyed the whole bring what you have and compete idea.. honestly, if thats the way it is, i dont even think id race it - if it was ONLY trikes and they didnt allow quads or dirt bikes, even then it would be just plain silly. the whole point of the SCORE baja races were variety and everyone was welcome. this totally ruined my respect for it, and how i feel about it. i really hope someone goes to run unoffically on a 3-wheeler and whoops some major arse. throw a few rocks up at some panty waist trike haters too will ya

Maybe a future Trike Fest type event should be planned there in a year or two....on a date that just happens to coincide with the race:)

I would definitely be there!
I'm thinking very seriously about it even if there were only a few of us. I guess I've got my motivation/direction now for the next project.

There's plenty of room in those rules for them to decide not to let a trike run if one shows up. I didn't even know about them though so thanks for the link. I'll look into it.
As for Score, after I get the desert racer completely done (and the thing is going to be absolutely sick looking), maybe I'll show to an event or two with a BIG ASS sign that says "SCORE WILL NOT LET THIS MACHINE COMPETE!" and get a petition going right there at their own event.

i dont know if its of help but when someone stoll my blaster all i had was my trike and the local mx track had no problem with me racing it, in fact it took 2nd twice!! every place has different rules the big series are probably a no go but small mx tracks wont have a problem.

I'm not interested in MX though. I don't even know if there are any motocross tracks around here (I would assume so).

Good fight Doug! I went through similar issues with ama district 37 to allow me to race out here in the smaller desert events. I do think if enough riders on trikes did what you did they may reconsider. Then money becomes an issue. It's easier to say no to one guy than it is to twenty.
Perhaps it's time to get into the race promotion business and just stage our own trike desert event, heck....allow quads too. With a year or two planning it could work for sure. Score started somewhere. My last year of desert racing on trikes was 1986 and I can remember beating many fourtrax and quadracers on a regular basis, even at Barstow to Vegas. I'd love to get out there and race again.

Go and race unofficial, and win.
If you beat them across the line, they cameras will catch what you want, and no one wants bad PR when they can have good PR.

I've been to many score events, and you don't want to race them on a trike. It cost tooooo much money for nothing in return. The bikes / atv's start two hours before the trophy trucks and buggies, but the biggest fear for the riders is still getting run over, so its not really worth the risk. The locals down there will steal all your crap when your not looking. Not to mention the logistcal support you would need to have with you just to complete the race.....It is a giant 250 -1000 mile lap, not a small course so your pit support has to keep up with you. It just really is not worth it.
.....BUT there is a brighter side. There is a mexican race series just like SCORE called CODE, and I think there is another. They run races in Mexico on the same routes that SCORE does for a lot cheaper entry fee and have also allowed trikes to race. Look into that if you would like too.
Also our local desert racing organization D38 here is plaster city / ocotillo in southern california runs alot of races from 50 - 250 miles. They don't allow trikes however, but they race on public OHV land so they are not allowed to have a closed course. You could technically race your three wheeler on the same course with your friends after the real racers took off. Their rider meetings are open to the public just before the race, and their courses are fairly well marked. I would just suggest you get out of the way when the top racers are passing you, but I can guarantee that you will be able to pass a decent amount of ATV and MC riders along your "ride." With enough friends and other racing their trikes I bet it would be pretty fun, ofcourse you might piss the D38 guys off, but they'll get over it as long as you don't interfere with their event.
