got the parts I needed today from bruce to go ahead and start the build!
WHO Knows witch way the rings go,,,I know the N on the ring goes up but witch is the top and the bottom? theres a little lip on each ring and it says not to interchange the top and bottom...
with the N faceing up on both the lips could face each other in the middle,,OR one could face down and one face up..

Are you saying the rings have a notch that goes around the locating pin in the piston, or that the rings thicker on the outside edge than the inside one?
Any way to get a pic, or two?
theres a minor lip on the outside of the ring that is critical to how it runs, the bottom goes (stamp up lip down) the top is ( stamp up lip up)

thanks syko for clearing that up.. the lip on the top ring faces up with the stamp up, and the bottom ring the lip faces down with the stamp up..its a real tiny lip on the outside of the ring that go's all the way around,,I tryed to get a pic but was unable to,,Just glad I caught it with my EYE!

Bryan, could you tell me what the size of your piston is and where you got your rings from oh and the $ involved in getting me some rings? lol i'm pretty sure my 300R is in need of some fresh rings, but i think mine is stock bore?
Bryan Raffa
04-18-2007, 10:54 AM
his is a stock bore also and Ill see if he can, the 300r kit was on a 83-84 motor when he bought the complete motor and was said to be a fresh piston and rings,,but when I build I like to put all fresh in.. I got 2 motors from him a 83-84 and a 81-82 took them both completely apart and used the internals of the 83-84 with the 81-82 cases and shift shaft because its going in a 82 frame and needs the longer shift shaft..Im not quite shure what he spent, he had a lot of the parts and spent over $100 at service honda,,Im shure when he read's this he will clairify that aspect.

Ahhh so the Ice Racer will be reinstated to its former glory. I was wondering if Bruce was ever going to get it up and running. I guess he just had to wait for a good 2-stroke mechanic to turn up:beer I think you have proven you know your way around a motor Raffa.

Yes sir.... I think I like it! Sounds like it should run as good as it looks!.
Now I got to think about gearing.... GOt a 13 and a 14T front and a 46 48 and 28 rears to choose from. I use to have a 15T front and a chain for it... have to see if I got it back and then look for it if I did.
Hmmmm.... costs?? The rings were new on ebay. Think I got them for under $5 from Shopesales. I ordered new head and base gaskets, crank bearings, and the oil seals for the crank bearings, shifter, clutch arm, drive sprocket and kick starter from Service Honda. Think minus the Big Red and 350X parts was around $80. I had a complete gasket kit from another ebay find for like $10-15 shipped, so all in all about $100 to freshen the motor. The 300R motor had bad cases but luckily it had very low hours on the top end. But since I had the original bore rings NOS, we tossed them in. We also were able to save the original head gasket, but since we had a new one available put that in too.

350x, thanks eh! i'll keep my eyes open on ebay!! i seen a piston kit but ya have to get the cylinder "deck" machined i guess...that kindda blows!! oh and thanks for the temporary hijacking of your guy's thread!
so i see a stock carb, are you going to b runnin the stock exhaust too? you can get a 86 ATC 250R carb from ebay for like $15 it will liven her up some! and with a BRV you can keep the stock jetting ('86), well atleast i could...
some day soon i'll through on my DG system and 38mm A/S and let ya's know how she wakes up!! just waiting for it to arrive (the DG that is)

oh and seems to me the "recomended gearing" is 14/38 or something close, for the bigbore kit
Bryan Raffa

he has a DG system for it,,,and Im trying to get him to run a bigger carb!!

^ Nice JUG ya got there ........ :D
That lil lady has been waiting 20 years to make her comeback.
Gunna go with the 14 tooth counter sprocket and see how it plays out first then drop back to a 13 if need, nice. 38 tooth on the rear. Should be fun fun fun!

Looking good. You're going to need more sprocket in the front I think. My 300 with a 15 in front, stock rear and 20" tires pulled like mad. With stock gearing it was almost unrideable since you had to sit on the tank in 5th.

I got that 14 and a 38 ... with 21" tires wonder who has the 15 tooth...lol
