The vin # is 20E-009696
That makes it an 84 I believe, picked it up with the clutch all torn apart, looks like the little ringclips that hold the pressure plate on the basket popped off. All the pieces are there, just have to make the time to put it back together :Bounce
Rainbow girl has already called it, she can't wait to go riding with the Z on the 84 YT175 :w00t:

Did find this bent and broken ring (or something). Is that a spacer for the plates or something else?
I will get the manual, just thought someone might know, thanks, DRaKuLa:beer
Just found the piece (inner circlip). Quite the set-up for the clutch. First part I can add to the list

That looks like the large ring that goes on after the plates. It clips in to a grove on the inside edge of the basket.

Thanks thefox. I've never seen a clutch set-up like this before, the funky springs and the ball-and-ramp set-up. I think Yamaha outdid themselves with this one, no wonder it broke. I bet Honda never did that set-up LOL!

Yeah it is a different setup then normal. I wonder if Yamaha used such a big clutch because it was not a performance trike and they wanted to tame down the 2 stroke engine. Still a cool little trike though, I wish I got to ride my brothers YT125 more then I did before he sold it.

I don't know if an air cooled yz set-up would work but here's a better picture of the basket.

The basket also has this one-way ratchet set-up, must be for the pull-start?

The clutch assembly is the same as in the dt125-dt175 dirt bikes, same engine really. You must make sure that have all the little springs and there are even specs for the springs length. Also you need to make sure all the little balls are in the bottom of your basket in the proper place. I just rebuilt a yt125 clutch which is exactly the same and the easiest way to do it was to lay the trike on it's side and install all the parts that way so the balls and clutch plates don't fall out while trying to put it all together. With all brand new clutch plates, clutch fibres, pressure plate and new springs it was still less than $75 dollars. Had to do some serious shopping. You can get nos parts on ebay cheap if you look. You also have to have patience with that large clip. Someone tried forcing the ring in you have and busted it, it's easy to do if you get rushed. The clutch job is really not that hard. And kawasaki uses a similar 3 ball and ramp set up for the auto shift clutches. Take your time, order all the correct parts ahead of time and have fun. I have a manual if you have any questions, I can help talk you through the clutch install.

Thanks for the info Vealmonkey, wont be able to work on it for a little while but I'm excited to work with that clutch. Now that I'm finding my way around here I'll look you up when I get there.

Vealmonkey,
Is the DT a manual clutch? I have heard that the whole DT motor bolts in but I would think the kickstarter would then be under the plastic. It would be nice to covert the YT over to a manual clutch.

Dt is a manual clutch. I've been trying to do some research on what would work and what won't. I know the yz heads and head gaskets will work if you use 79 and earlier yz, should give you a little extra compression. I'm not sure if you could do a recoil starter transplant, which is really what I've been trying to figure out the most. Also I keep finding bits and pieces that say a yt175 piston and cylinder will bolt up to the yt125 lower end! Trying to find out more about that. I know the yt175 front end is switchable if you want front suspension. I was hoping someone might try and copy 1 of the suspension kits that would work on the yt125, that would be cool. Also, there are some interesting aftermarket pieces I've been looking into that should work, but I haven't been able to purchase any to test my theory out. I bought a 1980 yt125 from rassagmc and it is sort of becoming a test bed for a couple ideas that I have. When I have a couple definite answers I will gladly post them, but I'm in the process of getting some parts together for a little experimentation. Wish me luck, the results could be very interesting and fun.
