View Full Version : FOR THE TRIKE CRAZY, pics from back in the day!

This is collection of pictures I was looking for but did find until recently.
I was about 14 or 15 years old at the time. Notice that none of us was wearing any protection equipment, not even a helmet. DO NOT DO THIS. Always wear the right protective equipment. The minimum you should wear is a helmet.

Some are from 1988 and some from 1987, trikes were still very much in use as you will see. We were "DRAG RACERS ONLY" as you can tell, so, no "air time here. Sorry. Notice the absence of extended swingers, some did have them, but not here.
These are very large files, but I wanted to share this with you guys...
Enjoy...

The kid in the 1988 TRX 250R is Rolo, a very good friend of mine. The TRX was brand new!!

http://i11.tinypic.com/483skgk.jpg

This 200x was built by yours trully. It was one 200X that was not to be beat by 250R's, well, most of then anyways.

http://i12.tinypic.com/3586p9l.jpg

The 200X again, I remember this like it was yesterday, It came from behind to win.
It was owned by my best friend, Javier, the best driver/rider of all of our huge group. He was light to. The "big" guy on the TRX is Tato.

http://i15.tinypic.com/44g4v46.jpg

The 200X after something was done to it, I can't remember what (probably a cam or carb change). This thing was FAST!!!!!

Drag racing at Barceloneta, this beach is no longer used for racing or anything else for that matter. It was closed for good in 1989.

Dammit!

Sweet pics, im also interested in what was done to that 200x.

This 1985 TRI-Z was owned by my friend Saul. He was all about having fun, not much into mods. 1988

http://i19.tinypic.com/42ibq1g.jpg

Yours truly on the near lane, my friend "Fafo" on the far on the most beatyful and deadly fast all white 250R. We raced the modified class. He beat me on that pass. Oh well!!!
This track we open for the first time in 1987. It is now a 1/8 asphalt strip.

http://i12.tinypic.com/400z4nq.jpg

The rivalry of Honda -vs- Kawasaki -vs- Yamaha was very much alive here in the island of Puerto Rico as you will see. My friend Ricky Ambert on the 87' Tecate racing an unknown rider on a 250R, The HONDA was the winner. 1987

http://i12.tinypic.com/2vvn7rb.jpg

My frienD (and neighbor) "Fafo" on the beautiful white 250R getting beat (after beating me) by an even faster Tri-Z. 1987

More 80's action from Barceloneta beach. Notice the 200x always between 250's That's me on the far right on the "brand new" at the time TRX 250R. 1988

http://i11.tinypic.com/35alq9t.jpg

This was the fastest ATC 70 at the time (maybe ever) it was owned by the owner of the best ATV speed shop on the island at the time, Hy-Per Racing.
This little rocket would kill just about everything but R's. It used it's 70 engine, no swaps here. It was so modified it needed 20 minutes of work per pass minimum. Needless to say it was nitrous injected. The rider was only 7 years old at the time.

This was the best time of my life... BAR NONE.

Are those wheelie bars on some of those machines?

torker
04-10-2007, 08:29 PM
We were all kids at the time, as you can see from the pictures, but it was so much fun.

The engine in that 85 200X came from his other 200x which was an 84 beater.
It was hot rodded like just about any other engine with a 12:5.1 wiseco I ordered I believe from Scorcher racing or someone. Even at that age I was (and still am) very methodical about everything. The cam, exhaust and carb I ordered from DG, The trick was done with a bigger intake manifold to fit the 34mm Keihin flat slide carb w/an air filter to the carb. I can't remeber the specs on the cam but it was a very radical grind from Web Cam. It was meticuslously balance and every spec and clearance checked and re-checked. The first ported head I did my self, after that it was sent to Paul Turner, believing his work on a 4 stroke would be as good as his 2 stroke engines and pipes. But it wasn't.
Then the 85 engine was sent to Curtis Sparks and all hell broke loose. His parent had the budget so I was all up for it. The owner and my best friend, Javier, was a skinny dreat driver. One of the best. I was a very decent driver too (Now I'm just not as crazy). There is a lot more to this 200X. I leave with this for now.

Some of them did have wheelie bars, but not all.
All the modified class trikes did as there was no other way of winning...If the other had one and you did not...You've just lost that race.

Truly some awesome random pics! At the time, probably just another weekend of having fun. Now the're memories that can be shared with thousands and remembered for a lifetime. Now we have no new trikes and far fewer places to ride than ever. Such a shame!

The trike with the white plastics was not an 87 (I wish) it was an 85 that a few months before was rolled on the same beach, it had some awesome sand trails, jumps and small but very technical dunes, it was fitted with white Maier plastics afterwards. The front fender was the only piece of plastic not broken. I can't remember his name.

The low handlebars were called drag bars. Much like today's cruiser bike bars.
If you were a Drag Racer back then it was a standard item. I remember they were$20.00 at the time!!!

Yeah, we were really kids having fun. But you know what?
Racing kept us all out of the streets.

And as far as who was paying for bikes and parts, well, bikes were mostly bought by our parents but most of us , if not all, worked doing whatever we could do.
Some sold newspapers, some washed cars, some had parents that liked the sport and had the money to back it up. Me, I washed cars, moan loans, painted houses but mostly, I was the one doing the mechanical work on these machines, well, most of them anyways.
That kept most of us all out of trouble!!! And in the sport.

Hi there Speedbump:
The white T-4 was owned by my friend Melvin. When these pictures were taken it didn't had a lot done to it, but it got the full Klemm Research tratment soon afterwards, I remember having a lot of trouble beating it with my "home made" TRX after the T-4 was done.
It was quick. But it was also beat!!!:beer

Hi Torker,
You guys had it made back then. Just imagine being able to do that now. Only at private places or somewhere you have to pay. (as far as the beach riding) I see by the condition of Sauls front tire on the Z that the rigs saw the pavement a lot too, and it doest sound like anyone bothered you about that either. Great pictures, thanks for sharing! What are your current rides?

Cool pictures, I love to see the old 3 wheelers in their heyday.

also, you younger guys and girls now know why they were banned: most of the people riding them were idiots in shorts and flip flops with no helmets

Torker i'll be down there in June or July.

Whats a good month with not so much freakin rain?!? Also any "lost" beaches still, or have people found them all?

Also heard Iguana's run the place, that true?

BTW, There were some Cagiva's sold down there if I remember correctly, ever sen one?

torker

Hi there: June or July will be hot as hell for sure. Being tropical, rain can come anytime, specially in the afternoon. I don't think there are any lost beaches, not that I've heard. About the Cagivas, I have only seen 2 Cagiva bikes in the Island in my lifetime, no trykes. About Iguanas, well there are lots of them, but they don't really run the place, WE DO!!!
Look me up when you're here. I'll show you around.

Will do, havent been there in the last 8 years, so I guess it will be a little different. I know that right now is the stormy season, I remember going in June July last time and being in the nice 100 degree days and 80 degree nights. Loved it. I may go in April or May, that way my GF can relax without the huge heat.

I have seen a Cagiva trike down there, haha only one dealership sold them and I doubt they sold a lot.

The T3 ran the stock class. Other than beeing lowered it was not modded. It even ran with the stock tires. That bike was lost to hystory. He disassembled it to have the frame painted Kawasaki green in 89', it's parts were put in big trash bags in the garage. His mom, who bought the bike, put most of it in the trash. THE END.
