what would it take to put a kx 500 motor in a stock 86 t3 frame? i have the 86 in the reassembly stages, and now i am starting to think about what i wanna do about the powerplant. i could easily go with the 86 t3 motor, but i was kinda thinking i wanted to maybe try this kx 500 mod thing. what do i need exactly to do this conversion? any and all info welcome and wanted. bgm, jump in here man, i know you have had this thought running thru your head for a while.

a new paint color ,and a good mechanic-
hey you asked-lol love the tecates but i hate the white-is that just the primer color??
it would be sweet with a jade green- or candy green colored frame- a lil metalflake in it---- yea yea
i think house of kolor has a (pagan gold)-i think its really a green color though --
might be worth looking into before you get too far-------

well jason your the first one to say you dont like the white frame. that is its color, white. looks great when all done. my 85 is the same color scheme and i have nothing but rave reviews over it. and yeah i think i am a pretty good mechanic as well jason, been riding well over 20 yrs, and wrenching on everything from bikes to cars and in between since i was knee high to a grasshopper, so yeah i think i know my business when it comes to mechanics.

Scoot, your trike looks great. Love the white. I wouldn't change a thing with the color. As far as the engine, the 500 sounds kind of mean. If you do that I recommend a swingarm extend.

The kx500 is a pretty easy swap into a kxt. all you need 2 fabricate is the top motor mount and mod the kx500 pipe. You can't run the airbox. Everything else is a bolt in, sprockets line up. run the 500s electronics and you are done.
GOOD LUCK

I don't see why the airbox couldn't be used? Just run the Tecate carb boot on the KX. It fits, trust me. lol

All new motor mounts (removeable stock style, only the top mounts?) need to be made and the tube above the sparkplug needs a notch/weld in it to clear the plug/cap. The pipe will fit but needs new mounts and some rework on the end of it.

Seems to be all straightforward stuff IMO and definately worth it.

so any year from 90 up will work? is this true? i could go get something as new as a 2000 or 2001 and it should fit? hmmmm, coool. this just might have to happen after all.

The 1990 to 2004 motors are all the same.

90-up are all the same. The earlier 89 and previous are all a little different in the powervalve design therefore topend parts will not interchange with the 90-up.

Best upgrades for these motors are vforce cage and reed spacer which give an increase in power and smooth out the hit.

I like it:drool: . This is giving me an idea on what to to with my 84 big red. No powerplant in it, but I could start cleaning it up for a refreshing paint job for the future. Can't wait to see it all together. 500cc! I'm glad your riding it and not me. My wife cut my balls off 5 years ago.  :beer

All kinds of pipes out there for the 500. DOMA being one of the best. Pipe mounts and the end of it are the only things needing mods. Pipe fits very nice from what I've seen.

Some guys on KXRIDERS were telling me 125mph with the KX bike geared 15/38. On the lake passing sleds, not just 450's. There are bigbore kits for them as well...but then everyone would think you've got a small dick.

Expect to pay for the 500 motor in good nick, they are a hot commodity.

Just curious if you guys balance the cranks in these big 500 thumpers. I know most that have done the tecate 4 kx500 swap, balance to keep the vibes down on em...

Scoot, definetly love the color combo! Trying to convince my bro in doing a white or silver frame with his 85 T3

well the wife and everone talking about this project has changed my mind on selling off the 86 roller. i am definately going to do this kx 500 project, and i am thinking of going with the flat tracker look as well. will probably have a few questions throughout the project, like suspension, how do i slam this thing to the ground. i am gonna run either american racer rears or tri tracs, during the winter i will go with a set of studded turf tamers on the lake. and if i move down to florida i would definately be looking into running with billy and the boys!!! the image i got in my mind of this beats is awesome....the colors are going to be the same as the 85, thanks for all the compliments guys. thsi thing has been sitting and this thread i thought had died, now its giving me the motivation to start working on it some more. anyone know of where to get a nice kx500 motor let me know.

a little side by side for yahs to see what the end result will look like on the colors.

OH YEA!! you moving to florida!! the main problem with lowering the rear is that the chain will end up coming in contact with the frame, so it need to be modded, either heated and bent or cut out and a new bend welding in. That will be awesome if you come down here! then we will have the "three" manufactures racing in trike class, all we need now is a tiger, yea right

Your better off finding a whole parts bike then just the motor and electronics. You'll pay more otherwise.

I've read on KXriders of guys breaking 125mph on the lakes come wintertime on the dirtbikes. I figure theres a 4 inch rear tire difference between the bike and the trikes 18 inch tires. So by rights a 15/38 sprocket setup and 18 inch tires should land you in the 100mph range.

As far as your setup goes, why not run 400ex hubs and 8 inch wheels then 18 inch Cheng Shin Ice Tires? Stud them and you'll have no worries on the lake in the winter.

To lower the trike, do the Jimmy White mods to the forks and then losen the preload on the shock spring and use the dogbone link to lower the rear. That should get you pretty darn low. The 400EX hubs and offset wheels should give you the width you need as well.

I cannot wait to get my 500 built. This winter I'll be sure to hit the ponds with it.

400ex hubs work on the tecate axle?

BigGreenMachine
06-15-2007, 01:53 PM
Only on the 86/87 Tecate axle, us 84/85 guys are SOL.

Man that sucks... Yea one of our tecates has a set of honda bolt pattern hubs but with kawasaki splines for the 84/85 axles..

Well I've never seen anyone elaborate on this so.........

1. Forgot to put the shock mounts on. But they will fit in their spaces.

2 . Lower motor mounts line up with optional holes.

3. Stock pipe in pic is damaged and rewelded and does seem to interfere with right hand radiator. Wish I had a better pipe. Pipe also close to tank, but aren't they all?

4. Needs front motor mounts.

5. Cross brace mod needed to fit plug of course.

6. How well do the sprockets line up?

BigGreenMachine
06-03-2008, 11:10 PM
Sprockets will be perfect.
