View Full Version : R or X??
Ok guys, newbie here and I need some input. I have the chance to buy a 250R or a 350X (Roughly same $$) Which should I go with?
Let me hear some opinions. I got my own opinion but I've nere ridden a 350X.

Hi and welcome. This board is great. I choose the 350x over the two stroke. The 350x is just gas and go.
OMG another ga boy!! man you guys are comming out of the wood work?! I love my R's im not a 4 stroke person, if your in south ga swing by I'll let you rip on one of my rigs so you can better understand the 2-stroke goddly power!!! (liquid dosnt count as he has a big bore 4-poker, lol) welcome to the boards man!! were in ga are ya??( i may have already asked ya since im a dummy) lol!!! woo hoo!!

My initial response is to say buy both! Because they both have their place. I have been a two stroke guy for much of my life and just obtained an 86 350x. I have had more fun on my 350x than my two strokes because of where i ride.
It depends on the terrain you ride on. If you want to ride up that big mountain trail - get a 350x. If you want to open it up in sand pits or long stretches - get the R. The R is definetly faster and more thrilling. But to just gas and go on a big bore 350 is really nice for me right now.
either way - both have a six speed, which is nice.

Both are '85's.
Here's the R

 Both look nice. I can never vote against an X. So I vote for the X. Really it all depends on what you are wanting it to do. Your comparing apples to oranges here. King of the Trail or the King of speed. Your choice.:beer Buy both ;)
And welcome to 3ww

I figures you are gonna have to toss a coin up in the air and turn your back and call it. Then you will see the freak of nature of the coin standing on its edge and you have to buy both. I'd like to have both, both of them look good, I even bet they would look better next too each other in your garage. lol, so what I am no help.
I would pic the 250 R.They can be set up for trail riding and Speed all at the same time.

I vote for the R.

I say go with the R. I own an 86 250r and both my 200x's sit because I love the speed. As far as 350X I don't own one. Just going by 200X preformance.
Both bikes look to be in good shape. All depends on what you want.
Great input guys. Maybe this is a dumb question but from the sound of it noone thinks the 350X is fast. I know the R is faster but c'mon that's a big hammer to be throwing not to have any power behind it.
I will mostly do a lot of trail/mountain riding. Not much for drag racing or dune riding. (I'm in GA. Nuttin but CLAY 'round here)
Low end torque is a plus at lower speed. (Can you tell I'm leaning to the X?)
But when you get the 350X in the power band, it should have a good punch right?

Dont get it wrong. I think what they are saying is that the 250R will get up to speed real fast, being a 2 stroke. Remember 2 strokes need to be rebuilt every year or two, and you need to mix the 2 stroke oil into the gas correctly or she can blow. Its a pain on long trail rides.
The 350X is fast also but in a different way. Its 4 stroke Thunder which is a different kind of power and speed. Im sure you will find the 350X plenty fast. Its also a 4 stoke, so all you need to do is put some 97 Octane in it and ride all day. The motor will also need alot less maintenance.
They both look nice and would be nice to have but for Trail riding and having Gobs of Power for all conditions I would get the 350X. But I would look real close at both to see which one is in better condition. What is the cost of these trikes? Then we could answer a little better.

350x all day long...more reliable...i would never have a 250r inless i had a 350x sitting in the garage to ride while the 250r was being rebuilt every year

The 350x has a crap load of bottom end, and mid power. I have a completely stock 85 350x and it is fun all around bike. Still kicks ass in Pismo too.
if you are doing mostly trail/mountain riding, i would go with the 350x. you will not be disappointed.
Dammit!

350x for the riding you describe.
As for the whole 2-strokes being rebuilt every year thing, I've owned my 250R for 18 years and it's only been rebuilt twice. Granted there was a 7 year span there when it wasn't being used but that still leaves 11 years of reliable service and it does get ridden hard. The top end in it now is over two years old and it gets ridden mostly at the dunes, screaming up Olds and down the drag strip. Hasn't lost any power since that top end was fresh.

You know what I love about torque? EVERYTHNG!
My 350x really supprised me when I first took her for a ride. You can pull wheelies in every gear. Its a dream in the trails, at any rpm, theres plenty of power just waiting to spin those back tires.
Its also fun in the open areas, its got a good top speed, and the wheelie thing I mentioned.
 In conclusion, can you buy both? :naughty: The X is a great all around ride, and the R is a fun hang on and go machine!

The 350x is plenty fast. A stock 350x is some were in the 65 - 75 mph range
The R is 75 to 85 MPH range. The R is going to get up to top speed like a lightning bolt but it can't even come close to the low end grunt of the 350x.
R's can be made to be nice trail worthy bikes. The X will still walk on them in that enviroment. The 2 stroke/ R fan's will tell you they can be great trail machines but I can tell you first hand that a lightning quick 250r in tight trails with lots of trees is not good also the R will wear you out physically a lot quicker on trails. For trail / mountain riding you won't find a better trike than a X.
Sorry R guy's 350x is going to win this battle. :D
Dunes - MX- long open straight aways Maybe a R? ;)
I still prefer the smelly 2 stoke for all types of riding, as far as rebuild I can tell you for a FACT that since the day in 1983 when the honda place put the 300 hondaline kit on my 83 R it has never been taken apart and it RIPS! so thats 24 years of service!

If you like explosive power, seat of your pants riding and prefer to be wide open most of the time - buy the 250R.
If you want a straight gas fed, torque monster motor that won't shoot you 15 feet in the air with a simple throttle mistake - buy the 350X.
I've said it before, when a 250R is ridden the way Honda intended - you had better be on your game and are use to the power of a CR250 but with more traction. I loved the 250R I had but I knew that I'd get hurt bad on it sooner or later unless I sold it. The first time I rode it I ended up going way too fast and hit the bucket on my backhoe and I landed about 25 feet away. Ignorant, yes, very ignorant...
Although a 250R can be ridden and used in many different ways, it is meant to be in the air or on 2 wheels most of the time the engine is running....

WHAT ***********lking about?
A stock R does roughly 72mph while a stock 350x does roughly 60mph.
Call me nuts and poorly informed but a 350X does not do 60MPH. My 86 200X does 60MPH and a 350X certainly has the balls to go up a tooth on the front sprocket to reach a comparable speed.

The 350X definately has the torque.. an R stalls MUCH easier than the X. The X is definately better for snow riding. It all depends on what you want.. but I'd get both!! Haha.. I love my R but I also love my X.. so ride them both and choose.

about?

the 350x will do 65 minimum...and i know the 250r will do atleast 75
Ok Guys, I drove Saturday and picked up the bike.......I chose the 350X.
For the type of riding I do and the all around LowEnd Torque. I went with it.
MAN THIS THING IS AWESOME! 2nd and 3rd you can pull the front end up and once you wrestle it down it just flies!
Thanks for all the good advice. I'm gonna have a blast on this one!

Dude I'm telling you, go with the 350X!! I've had 2 strokes my whole life and loved them but I just bought a 350X about a month ago and LOVE IT!! There is always power there! I've been riding in this gravel pit that has some pretty steep sand hills and I can be putting up them in 2nd gear and anytime I want, I just nail the gas and wheely the rest of the way up! No downshifting required! I'm not dogging on 2 strokes because they are awesome too but I garantee you would not be disapointed with the 350X! Their fast! Also, I had my girl driving her car behind me to see how fast it toped out at and she said we were going around 68mph. And mines not even running 100% right now. So trust me, their fast!

I knew when I put those estimated top speeds I was about to start a disagreement. I knew better  I was just trying to give a general idea between the two top speed wise. I know with gearing you can make a ATC 110 do 60 mph.
Hey Mymint
I have never got to ride the dunes. There is no sand anywhere close. I would love to though. I don't disagree about the 350x holding its own in the dunes. But from the pic's I have seen by you lucky duners if I had that much open space I would pick the R. That's hard to admit beacause I am a die hard 350x fan.
