Hello all,

Question; where does a guy find the gear oil drain plug on a 1984 YTM200L? I want to change the gear oil if possible.

Or do the 1984 YTM200L's just have a wet clutch which gets its lube from the motor oil instead? If this is the case, would anyone recommend using synthetics?

Thanks!
Brad

The transmission uses the same oil as the engine. It takes 1.6 quarts and the drain plug is on the left side under by the shifter. Everyone has there own opinion on using synthetic oil in these things. I don’t bother because I end up changing my oil every few rides anyways and using synthetic oil would get very expensive. I don’t think the filters on these are very good (some trikes don’t even have one) and water can get in easier then it does in a car. I would rather have clean cheap oil in my machine then dirty “good” oil. I do use Amsoil synthetic oil in my motorcycle and I am glad I made the switch, it uses less oil now and I don’t have to change the oil for ~5,000 miles. I have heard people say synthetic is ok for the clutches and some say it is bad, I have not had a problem with it in my bike which uses the same style of manual clutch.
