Welp.. another setback... This was the last thing I was waiting for to complete my motor...

I need to replace the clutch on my 85 tri z.. So we went and got a used 84 YZ250 clutch off ebay thinking it would work but it's not even close!

The tri z basket is on the left.. and the 84 (we think?) is on the right. Perhaps the ebay one was mislisted.. anyone know what it is?

Also, anyone know what year YZ clutches are interchangable... I'm already $50 in the hole...

Are there any numbers on it? I got a YZ that was "supposed" to be an '85, but I'm thinking it is an '83 or '84 by some of the numbers. I am pretty sure the clutch was the same as my Tri-Z.

Okay, now you have me second guessing myself, and I'm going to have to go look again!

Chris I just checked all cross referneces for the 85 tri-z and 83-86 yz 250 clutch baskets. They all take the same part number.I know for a fact that my my 86 yz bottom end runs the same clutch plates and baskets as the tri-z.Maybe it was a mislisting on ebay. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx part number 39x-16150-00-00.

And the one you bought looks like a banshee basket. They use the same angle cut gear on a banshee. Not sure that is what you bought but it looks like a banshee to me.

i haven't looked for any numbers. its different because the gear is slanted and won't line up with the mating gear on the crank. also the plate fingers are placed apart more than the triz. it also looks overall taller to me. it had to have been listed wrong. probably an 82 or older

i checked into this at my local dealer last week and there are several baskets that fit in the tri-z ..cant remimber all of them but a yz 490 was supposed to be the same and several other dirt bikes . a buddy works at the dealership so if you have problems pm me and i will call him and get the complete list of years and models that were the same ....

Maybe if you can find some numbers on there someone here can help identify it.. then you can resell it (listed properly) and make some of my money back...

Is that basket grooved badly as well?

Um yeah just file it down man. I've seen much worse. Jeez if you're adamant about replacing it send it to me, I'll use it in the Z engine I'm building.

Louis, I was thinking this one isn't going to last much longer so I decided to find one in better shape. If you need one I'll have shawn send that back with my motor and you can have it. :beer

another issue i just thought of is making sure all have the same cut gear for the basket ...one of those baskets had a straight cut gear and the other was a cross cut gear ..
