My Big Red will wheelie about as far as I want it to. It has to be a balance style wheelie. My 250R will ride a power wheelie down the highway passing cars. Different style wheelie between the two machines but I have no problem on either.

your comparing apples to oranges. A es is WAY underpowered compared to an R. The sx and ES are whelie machines like DC said

3rd gear, low range, lean back, ride it out.

I can ride wheelies on my 250sx all day long up to 3rd gear. 4th gear usually won't hold it up but my clutch is slippin. I would cruise kinda slow in second then pull back and give er some gas... you're up... keep it up and pull through 3rd.... then see if 4th will hold it up. it's real easy when your going up a grade but more dangerous also if it comes all the way back.
Usually if it comes all the way back it'll stand up on the rack but I guess if you didn't know what you were doing it could come back on you.
Used to have a 250es that would hold it up in 5th if you could pull it back hard enough. If it came all the way back it would slide on the rack for a while then spin.. pretty scarey LOL the good ol days Another guy that rode the ol 250 used to hold the shifter up, gas it then drop the shifter and away he went on the wheelie or even a burnout. That was pretty rough on the machine though.
