:wondering I can not for the life of me get the brake drum off of my 85 atc 70. i've had it on its side soaking in penetrating oil since last night. i've been prying with the claw of a hammer, banging a flat head down the sides, and everything else. anyone have any tips? for a torch i only have propane, will that get it hot enough to help?

No... Even MAPP gas isn't hot enough to break frozen parts. Since I got oxy/acetylene there isn't anything I can't get apart...

Lucky you.. I guess you haven't run into anything seized up as bad as I have.

Can't say I never got anything apart with propane but heating up big areas requires alot of heat and quickly. After I bought the O/A setup, I decided that propane was best left for frozen my hot dogs and not my frozen parts

Maybe a dumb question, but do you have your hub off on that side yet? I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that the hub has to come off, then the axle cover/spacer piece - that holds the hub on.

yes i have the hub and the collar off. i heated it up for at least 5-10 minutes, pryed on it with a big pry bar and air hammered the area on the drum around the splines to try and loosen it up. i've fought with stuff before, but the condition of the rest of the trike are mint. i mean it was like the hubs or collars had never been off, the axle is like brand new. every bolt is original and not rounded or marked up. maybe it's never been off before. i dont understand what i'm supposed to do with a hammer? banging on it just puts dents in it, and it's not like i can hit it in the direction i want it to go. do you mean just bang around where the splines are to break the rust apart?

New Guy here and also semi- new to trikes, but im not new to cars and trucks.

If you pound on it in the direction you dont want it to go, it can loosen up and sort-of bounce backwards. Alls i know is it works good on vehicles and if all else fails get some oxy- actlyene.

Also dont pound on it near the edge, pound near the center cause you will be less likely to bend or warp it that way.

Everyone will probably think this is the stupidest comment ever, but.....
loosen up your brake line as much as you can so the pads arent sitting so close to the drum. That will give you a little more play tryin to break loose.

got it. 2 days of penetrating oil, air hammer, lots of cursing. the sprocket side hub and collar were a PITA also.
